About

Gordon Onslow Ford (British- American 1912-2003)
 Untitled 1964
 Mixed Media on Paper
Signed & Dated Lower Left 31.5" x 43.5" inches framed
25.5" x 37" inches unframed Gordon Onslow Ford began his artistic career in Paris in the late 30′s where he was part of the surrealist group surrounding Andre Breton. Other artists in this circle included Roberto Matta, Yves Tanguy, and Max Ernst. Onslow-Ford found inspiration in the drawings of Matta along with exhibitions of Mathematical Objects. As well as being and artist Onslow-Ford’s passion for art led him to collect paintings and frequently visit the studios of Picasso, Miro, de Chirico and Andre Masson. This painting reflects Onslow-Ford’s style in San Francisco during the years following his six year stay in a remote village in Mexico, where he learned the native way of living and participated in some native ceremonies. This is a striking work on paper showing Onslow-Ford’s surrealist language as influenced by his peers and life experiences.
