Heejin Sutton
Green Peas

2017

About the Item

Artist Comments
This piece is made by layering Korean mulberry paper on a wooden panel with homemade flour glue. Then I apply a glue base. Next, I draw my sketch, and trace it on the paper. Then I paint three or four layers of a background color using pigments and glue base. Lastly, I paint the subject in fine detail, which takes most of time. The painting is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

About the Artist
Heejin has been been drawing for as long as she can remember. She grew up with a serious illness and spent much of her childhood in the hospital. Drawing served as an outlet for her, bringing her peace and distraction. Heejin says there was no doubt as she grew up that she wanted to be an artist. She studied oriental painting extensively as a college student in South Korea and then went on to study art therapy in graduate school.

Then I paint three or four layers of a background color using pigments and glue base. Lastly, I paint the animal subject in fine detail, which takes most of time. The single animal represents loneliness. This piece is on a cradled wood panel with finished edges. It comes ready to hang.

Flotilla, Original Painting
By Jaime Ellsworth
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
A minimalist scene of a green boat sailing under moons, a giant flower and infinity-shaped clouds. Artist Jaime Ellsworth says the painting represents sailing off to a land of peace. Rendered in her signature style combining modern and primitive painting elements.

About the Artist
Jaime Ellsworth paints animals. Her career as a cowhand never got off the ground, so she stumbled into art never knowing it would complement her passion for animals so completely. Most subjects are her own, but lately she has expanded out of her corral to include bears and beasts not commonly seen on San Juan Island, in the Pacific Northwest, where she's lived for the last 30 years. She suspects it will be years before she runs out of inspiration or has jeans that aren’t covered with paw prints or paint.

Distant Shore, Oil Painting
By Heidi Hybl
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Abstracted, minimal view of the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The painting captures the motion of the rolling waves and a warm, tonal sunset. Rich green, blues, muted yellow and touches of red along the edges bring the scene to life.

About the Artist
Artist Heidi Hybl starts each day listening to the birds sing in the canyon near her home in Big Sur. Then, she makes a cup of tea, reviews the previous day’s work, turns on her podcasts and starts. She paints in a small studio that is separate from her house, and works on several pieces at a time within what she would call “organized chaos.” She also takes time to tend her flowers, vegetables, chickens and goats. A former medical professional, Heidi worked for several years with laser machines, developing a knowledge and a fascination with the color spectrum and light. Living in Big Sur offers inspiration in the ever-changing atmospheric conditions that arise when hills, canyons, and ocean meet. She then reduces these elements to an abstract experience on canvas in a color palette derived from her surroundings: sunsets and storms, fire and fog.
