About the Artist – James Meek:
James Meek is a prominent figure in the Southwestern art scene, best known for his abstract oil paintings and graphic compositions. Born in Tennessee in 1928, Meek began spending summers in Taos, New Mexico, in 1958 before relocating there full-time in the 1960s to devote himself to his art.
Educated at Murray State College (B.A., 1951) and Union University (M.A., 1952), Meek studied design, color theory, and art history under distinguished mentors such as Clara Eagle, Don Fenigan, Charles Bunnell, and Charles Dorn. After serving in the Army (1952–1954), he worked as an art instructor and art director in Colorado public schools before focusing exclusively on his creative practice.

James Meek
Southwestern artist James Meek was an active member of the Taos, New Mexico art colony. Known for his abstract oil paintings, he spent his summers in Taos beginning in 1958 and in the mid 1960s he resigned an administration position with the Rocky Ford, CO public schools to move to Taos and devote full time to painting. A Tennessee native, he was born October 2, 1928, received his B.A. degree from Murray State College (now University), Murray, KY in 1951 and a his M.A. from Union University, Jackson, TN in 1952. He studied design, color and art history with Clara Eagle, drawing with Don Fenigan, and painting with Charles Bunnell and Charles Dorn. After serving in the Army from 1952-1954, he began teaching in Rocky Ford, CO where he was first an art instructor and, later, art director for the system and principal of Jefferson Junior High School. He also taught adult education night classes in painting for four years while with the school system. Among exhibitions in which he participated: Museum of New Mexico Art Gallery Biennial, Murray (College) Alumni Invitational, Ten-year retrospective exhibition Creative Art Guild - Colorado, National Art Roundup - Las Vegas, NV, Contemporary Art Society Exhibition - Colorado Fine Arts Center - 1960.

As art director for Life in the 1930s and for Fortune in the 1940s, Piening completely redesigned the layout of each magazine. He also redesigned the layouts for thirty-four other major American magazines, including Town & Country and Cosmopolitan.
Through his design work, Piening had a great impact on the American public, although the millions who encountered his work most likely never knew his name. Between 1934 and 1964, Piening designed over sixty logos and trademarks for internationally-known products and companies. His most widely-recognized logo may have been the three interlocking rings of Ballantine beer. Piening’s other trademark designs include the Lincoln Zephyr...
