About the Item

A Tribute to Arab Women – A Collaboration Between Marion Boehm & Roger Moukarzel For this tribute to Arab women, Marion Boehm collaborated with Lebanese photographer Roger Moukarzel, merging photography with textile collage to create a striking celebration of femininity, heritage, and resilience. The portraits, originally captured by Moukarzel for his exhibition Jamal—which means “beauties” in Arabic—are reinterpreted through Boehm’s intricate layering of fabrics, patterns, and textures, transforming them into rich, multidimensional narratives. "Every encounter brings us something, every person opens us up to the world and helps us to better understand its diversity. The stranger is no longer a stranger, but a new piece of home. The other becomes a fragment of the mirror of our own self." —Marion Boehm Celebrating Arab Women: Strength, Beauty & Identity In this series, Boehm highlights the power, dignity, and elegance of Arab women, capturing their cultural heritage and evolving identities. By integrating traditional fabrics, intricate embroidery, and symbolic patterns, she elevates each portrait into a visual homage to resilience, grace, and femininity. Arab women have long been guardians of tradition while simultaneously shaping modernity. Through her compositions, Boehm explores their duality between heritage and contemporary self-expression, illustrating how past and present, strength and delicacy, tradition and reinvention coexist. A Fusion of Photography & Textile Collage Boehm’s collaboration with renowned photographers allows her to reinterpret portraiture through the lens of textile art, adding depth and materiality to traditionally two-dimensional images. Her intervention in Moukarzel’s work enhances the expressiveness of her subjects, drawing inspiration from both classical and contemporary artistic influences. While her aesthetic sometimes recalls historical portraiture, its essence is deeply rooted in intercultural storytelling. Boehm’s compositions serve as a tribute to Arab women as cultural carriers, embodying both ancestral traditions and modern aspirations. Background & Evolution Originally trained in interior architecture, Boehm worked as a designer in Europe before transitioning into a full-time artistic practice. Her move to Johannesburg in 2010 played a significant role in shaping her artistic identity, leading her to develop her distinctive approach to textile and mixed-media collage. Her works have been exhibited internationally in Germany, France, Morocco, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, the UAE, the UK, and the US, and are part of private and institutional collections worldwide. Today, her practice stands at the intersection of fine art, material culture, and contemporary portraiture, offering a poetic reflection on human connections and the passage of time. – EXHIBITIONS & PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Education & Early Career 1990 – 1997: Diploma in Interior Design, University FH – Darmstadt, Germany 1998 – 2010: Interior Designer at Thorer Interior Design – Frankfurt, Germany 1998 – 2010: Independent Interior Architect – Frankfurt, Cannes & Milan 2011 – 2013: Community Centre Work at Bolo’s – Kliptown, Johannesburg Photographic and video documentation, graphic interpretation in various media Selected Exhibitions & Art Fairs 2024 Tribute to Marion Boehm, Artcurial, Paris, France 2023 MENART FAIR, AYN Gallery, Brussels, Belgium Solo Show, AYN Gallery, Paris, France 2022 VOLTA Art Fair, OOA Gallery, Basel, Switzerland Barcelona Summer Group Show, OOA Gallery, Spain D.N.A. He began as a war photographer in the early 1980s, working with Sigma and Reuters, with his images featured in Newsweek, The Washington Post, and Paris Match. Moukarzel’s work consistently conveys messages of tolerance, respect, and diversity, celebrating heritage and traditions through the power of images. His latest series, exploring the beauty of the East, marks his first collaboration with Marion Boehm, where he allows her to reinterpret his portraits through textile-based interventions, transforming them into richly layered visual narratives. "I was invited to collaborate with Marion Boehm at the MENART Fair in Brussels. I was immediately drawn to the curation project proposed by Yasmine Azzi, founder of AYN Gallery, as the idea of creating cultural bridges between two artists through their work was incredibly compelling. Marion Boehm was an obvious choice for me, given the quality of her work. Her expertise in composition and fabric selection, with their vibrant colors and complex textures, is in total harmony with my visuals, bringing another dimension to the photographs. Marion was given complete artistic freedom to use my portraits, and I was captivated by the varied palette of colors and patterns in her compositions. This approach accentuates the staging of the figures, recalling classical portraiture while maintaining a strong contemporary presence. The result is captivating, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in this visual dialogue between photography and textile art. Working with Marion has been a truly enriching experience, and I am grateful for this artistic encounter."

During the last two years, the value of his works has multiplied by 5 , proof with the last Artcurial auction sale from December 4th 2019. With its carefully surrounded black shapes, its faces out of a comic strip and its bright colors, this work which treats adultery with derision corresponds well to the criteria of Free Figuration, a movement, born in 1979, around this Lyonnais artist and and his cronies. Casually appropriating advertising images, comics, science fiction as well as great works in the history of classical art, these artists break with the seriousness of the time. It is in Epinal style illustration and imagery that one must look for the missing link to understand the art of Combas. Robert COMBAS has been pursuing a unique approach since the 1980s. His eccentric and powerful representations of the world make this genius one of the emblematic figures of French contemporary art. The artist's work is now the subject of numerous retrospectives and institutional exhibitions. The enthusiasm of collectors becomes more important with each new public sale and its rating climbs which confirms the sustainable nature of the art of Robert COMBAS. He brought at the dawn of the 80s a new figurative painting. Present on the artistic scene since 1979 he is the creator of a movement that the artist Ben called the Free Figuration, movement comprising: Rémi Blanchard...
