Brooks Salzwedel’s work focuses on natural and unnatural landscapes disconnected from their usual surroundings or places in time. Using a self-created process involving materials such as graphite, mylar and resin, tape, colored pencil, and ink, his work evokes feelings of desolation through haunted, dreamlike visions of otherworldly terrains. Ancient trees, decaying flora, and icy mountains obscure long forgotten places and objects, at once familiar and unrecognizable, creating a space for rumination that challenges the relationship to their meaning.
Salzwedel received his B.F.A. from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, in 2004. Salzwedel graduated with honors and distinction quickly landing a solo show with NewSpace Gallery, Los Angeles. The same year Salzwedel also procured a high-end line of handmade belt buckles in the same process winning him the Best Belt Designer in Los Angeles by Los Angeles Magazine as well as one of LA’s top five accessories designers by Los Angeles Times Magazine West.

Drawing inspiration from the near-mythical fame that surrounded celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn before the instant and all-encompassing presence of the internet, Mars’ daring approach creates paintings with a nostalgic yet innovative vintage quality.
Mars begins by defining borders and background planes of color with sheets of brown paper and then proceeds to layer paint and vintage paper ephemera. He selectively sands segments of the layers, allowing specific portions of the underpainting to shine through, creating the sensation that the viewer is getting glimpses through a window into the Golden Age of America. By incorporating actual pieces of print from the eras he so adores and sealing it all under shining, impenetrable resin, Mars’s artworks transform into physical remembrances of a period in America’s past so loved and idolized, yet will forever remain trapped in history.
A graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York, his artwork was selected for the Absolut Vodka Blank campaign alongside Damien Hirst, and his largest sized piece to date was acquired by Philip Morris/Altria for their corporate headquarters in Virginia. In 2015 Mars was chosen for the cover of Neiman Marcus’ May Book, while CocaCola purchased several existing works and ordered commissions for a world tour celebrating the 100-year anniversary of their trademark bottle shape, in which his artwork was spotlighted. Lauren Ohlgren (American, b. 1959) began her art career in the mid 1990’s making hand-painted silk and art-to-wear. She then began to work in encaustics, and later incorporated various mixed media into her artwork. Ohlgren was the curator of Journal 365, A Page A Day community project in 2015 and The She Project, 2005-2013. Ohlgren is also the author of 2005 award winning book, The She Project; How ‘She’ Inspired a Community.
