Natasha Lelenco
Contemporary Vibrant Profile of a Black Woman. French Phrase "Currency #223"

2024

About the Item

This circular portrait painting, part of Natasha Lelenco’s Currencies series, presents a vivid female profile against a deep fuchsia background. Executed in acrylic on treated pine wood, the figure’s skin is rendered in a desaturated charcoal green, while the headscarf and earring details evoke textures drawn from both urban iconography and diasporic identity. Inscribed in French around the edge of the piece is the phrase: “Tout ce que j’ai vécu doit compter pour quelque chose.”, which translates as: “Everything I’ve lived through must count for something.” This statement of lived experience resonates with the central themes of Pride Month: recognition, visibility, and validation of queer and LGBTQ+ lives. By foregrounding a figure whose gaze is firm yet inward, the work articulates the tension between exterior expression and interior resilience. The stylized features and marked outlines further signal a queer sensibility, inviting reflection on gender performance, racialized identity, and the struggle to assert value and presence in systems that often erase or marginalize non-normative bodies. About the Series The Currencies series plays with the visual language of coins to reimagine portraits as symbolic units of value. Each piece features a different individual with inscriptions that reflect themes of displacement, identity, and social hierarchies. The deliberate variation in pricing between pieces underscores the arbitrary nature of how human worth is often assessed — by origin, class, or perceived difference. The series also proposes a conceptual economy: each work can be exchanged in the future at the artist’s studio in Galicia for another piece of equivalent value, transforming the artwork into an actual unit of currency — a gesture of both critique and alternative proposal. Installation and Custom Projects Each piece is created on a circular cut of treated pine wood, measuring 26 cm in diameter and 2 cm thick. Designed to function individually or as part of larger constellations, these works adapt easily to site-specific arrangements. Distorted Green Portrait with Erased Inscription. "Currency #230"
By Natasha Lelenco
Located in FISTERRA, ES
This circular green-toned portrait explores themes of exclusion, invisibility, and erasure within identity discourse. The facial features appear blurred, almost erased, dissolving into an ambiguous presence that resists clear representation. This visual distortion is mirrored by the inscription itself—scratched, overwritten, and rendered unreadable. The deliberate removal of legibility evokes the frustration of miscommunication and the social marginalization of those whose narratives remain silenced.
