About the Item

This circular wood panel artwork from Natasha Lelenco’s Currencies series presents a symbolic female portrait rendered in rich green hues over a saturated blue background. The portrait, oscillating between abstraction and realism, emerges with quiet intensity from the surface, its expression marked by distance and resilience. Surrounding the figure, a Polish phrase is inscribed: “Przepraszam, ja też nie jestem stąd” (“I’m sorry, I’m not from here either”), reinforcing the work’s underlying reflection on belonging and displacement. Evoking the formal language of currency, this hand-painted piece is part of a broader series that reimagines the coin as a site of personal memory and collective inequality. Here, the repetition of faces and multilingual inscriptions engages with migration, estrangement, and the social hierarchies that condition the experience of mobility. With its clean circular cut (26 cm diameter, 2 cm thick), the piece combines painterly technique and sculptural volume, allowing for installation as an autonomous work or integrated into modular compositions. About the Series This artwork belongs to Lo siento no soy de aquí / Currencies, a documentary art project by Natasha Lelenco that explores the emotional and economic dimensions of migration. Each coin-shaped panel serves as a visual and conceptual fragment of a wider story—one that confronts inequality, identity, and the shifting values assigned to human life. Using multilingual phrases drawn from real conversations and interviews with migrants, the series investigates both systemic marginalization and the psychological toll of uprooting, drawing from the concept of Ulysses syndrome and the metaphor of the coin as a token of exchange, worth, and loss. Collectors may acquire these coins as individual pieces or compose site-specific groupings. Each work carries a conceptual clause: it may be returned in the future and exchanged for a different piece from the series, reinforcing the idea of value in flux. Technical Details Technique: Acrylic and mixed media on treated pine wood Dimensions: Ø 26 cm x 2 cm thickness Year: 2023 Ready to hang. Ships in secure, custom box.
