Natasha Lelenco
Purple and Yellow Contemporary Man Portrait Coin on Wood. 'Currency #253'

2025

About the Item

Unique circular artwork from Natasha Lelenco’s acclaimed Currencies series, featuring the right-facing profile of a young male figure set against a saturated purple background. His skin is rendered in delicate transitions of greens and violets, with stylized yellow highlights on the ear and lips creating an intentional chromatic dissonance that suggests identity fluidity. Around the figure runs a hand-painted inscription in Spanish: “¿MI HOGAR? AQUÍ, PERO FALTA ALGO”, which translates to “My home? Here, but something’s missing.” This text offers a poetic reflection on belonging, rootedness, and the emotional liminality often experienced by queer, migrant, or dissident individuals. The profile’s confident posture contrasts with the uncertainty implied by the phrase, reinforcing the piece’s expressive tension. About the Series: The Currencies series transforms the concept of the coin into a symbolic platform for portraits that reflect on themes of migration, identity, value, and social inequality. The inscriptions—always written around the edge like on real currency—are fragments of inner monologue or political commentary, inscribed in different languages according to each character’s origin. Installation and Custom Projects: Each piece in the Currencies series is designed to function both as a stand-alone artwork or as part of larger wall panels. Casa das Peritas represents Natasha Lelenco and offers exclusive commissions of site-specific installations composed of multiple pieces, tailored to the needs of each client. Contact us for details and custom proposals. Conceptual Framework: The series operates on two conceptual levels: Arbitrary Pricing as Commentary: The slightly varied prices across the works allude to the arbitrary ways in which people are valued differently based on ethnicity, origin, gender or class—exposing structural inequalities. Currency-as-Promise Mechanism: Each piece functions literally as a coin. In the future, the buyer may choose to redeem the artwork at Natasha Lelenco’s studio in Galicia, exchanging its “face value” for a new commissioned work of equivalent price—creating a unique fusion of artistic exchange, symbolic economy, and relational practice. "Benday Sophia 1" pays tribute to those paintings that became the trademark of Ceravolo's unique and trend setting style of painting. His work is collected worldwide and is in many important collections including, Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart, Hugh Hefner and Prince Jefri of Brunei to name only a few. In addition to those, his paintings came to popular attention when he was commissioned to create 5 large scale paintings for the lobby of The Palladium Theatre in New York City. In this painting, Ceravolo has featured an image of his pop art painting of Sophia Loren, and combined it with a pattern of benday dots to create the basis of "Benday Sophia 1". He then paints his trademark brush strokes and textures on the canvas over the pop art portrait. Then, he paints the "floating" illusion that creates the 3d floating effect he is known for.
