Todd Murphy (American (Georgia), b. 1962 -). "DRESS STRAW" - 21st century, mixed media. A figural depiction of elephant using straw and burlap behind painted Plexiglas to create texture, depth and dimension. Approx. 50" x 38" (frame). This is Todd Murphy most Iconic piece a larger Virsion of this piece was sold for $80,000 and Mr. Murphy sold this piece before his passing for $195,000 to a private collector. Acclaimed artist Todd Murphy's striking mixed media artwork. Reverse printed on Plexiglas Made of straw, painted burlap and tulle to create evocative three-dimensional assemblages, Each is one of a kind and highly collectible, Shadowboxed inside black wood frames. CONDITION: Not examined out of frame. No apparent restoration. Minor scuffing to frame. ABOUT For more than three decades, Todd Murphy has explored a practice that combines sculpture, painting and photography. With the inquisitiveness of a 19th century Naturalist, Murphy has travelled to the far reaches of the world, collecting, photographing, and fastidiously cataloging everything from melting glaciers, to aviary species, to exotic fruit. His photographic studies of curiosities become sources for complex narratives based on philosophy, mythology, and the supernatural. In his work, Murphy often goes beyond these classical prototypes to include subtexts of bigotry, Southern history, and fantastic literary stories. In the end, his recurring protagonists — horses, birds, dresses, and boats — are poetic vehicles for a humanistic discourse.
