In Alice Underground, Zoa Ace conjures a dreamlike interior where the surreal logic of Wonderland meets a pop-surrealist aesthetic. Centered around the iconic moment Alice considers drinking the mysterious bottle, the scene brims with symbolism, collage ephemera, and offbeat humor. The checkerboard floor grounds the composition in visual disorientation, while layered elements—roses, hearts, keys, and a bottle marked “Imported France”—hint at love, transformation, and the absurdity of social rules.
Ace’s use of color and texture breathes new life into the Victorian illustrations, with Alice’s vibrant blue dress contrasting against the muted architectural lines and enigmatic characters: the hurried White Rabbit, the ever-observant Mad Hatter, and background objects seemingly plucked from a modern curiosity cabinet. A golden lock and floating heart suggest secrets, romance, and guarded emotions, reinforcing the idea of Wonderland not just as a place of whimsy, but as a subconscious maze of choices and identities.

Zoa Ace
Zoa Ace was born in Rockford, Illinois, in the 20th century. She is influenced by Max Beckman (1884–1950), who was a German painter, draftsman, printmaker, sculptor and writer. Although he is classified as an Expressionist artist, he rejected both the term and the movement. Zoa's images are subconsciously manifested into a juxtaposition of themes and figures in motion.
