Alejandra España
"Isla nube" Cloud Island - 100% wool tapestry dyed naturally, handmade, artisan

2023

About the Item

This handcrafted wool tapestry arises as a collaboration between the artist and artisans from Teotitlán del Valle, a community in Oaxaca, southwest Mexico. In Oaxaca, the textile tradition has pre-Hispanic reminiscences that merged and enriched with the arrival of the Spanish; they brought wool-producing sheep, mulberry trees, and silkworms, as well as the tools to transform these fibers into yarns and fabrics. Currently in Oaxaca, textile crafts from different regions of the state are identified by their highly original designs and colors, but in Teotitlán del Valle there are families that have been dedicated to this craft activity for years. Their technique and above all their love for textiles have been transmitted from generation to generation. A Teotilán del Valle rug is the result of the work and dedication of skilled artisans, who with their magical hands manage to convey the love they have for that "land of the gods", as its name means in the Nahuatl language. This piece is part of an exposition called "Jardín Particular" which stands for Particular Garden or Private Garden. Nature is a central theme in Alejandra's work, and with this landscape, we can notice her profound curiosity about the natural world that out to be transformative and ever-changing. Alejandra´s work invites the spectator to dive into her own particular garden, which she cultivates in her heart. She evokes transformation, change, movement, and nature.
