About the Item

Enciclopedia Italiana- T.L.S. is a Typewritten Letter Signed by Giovanni Gentile to Ugo Ojetti. Rome, November 9th 1935. In Italian. One page, single-sided. On letterhead "Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana fondata da Giovanni Treccani , Roma". Excellent conditions, with some blue pencil signs. The Director of the Italian Encyclopedia, Giovanni Gentile, writes to Ugo Ojetti, one of the institute members, to assure the Countess Pecci-Blunt that Villa Marlia will be mentioned under the entry "Villa" in the encyclopedia. The Ugo Ojetti's business card is attached and reports Ojetti's autograph notes of greetings. Giovanni Gentile (Castelvetrano, 1875 - Florence, 1944) Italian philosopher, pedagogist, politician and academic, Giovanni Gentile, together with Benedetto Croce, was one of the greatest exponents of Italian philosophical neo-idealism and idealism, as well as an important protagonist of Italian culture in the first half of the twentieth century, co-founder of the Institute of Encyclopedia Italiana and, as minister, creator, in 1923, of the reform of public education known as the Gentile Reform. Unfortunately, he was also a leading figure of Italian fascism, even considered the inventor of the ideology of fascism. Ugo Ojetti (Rome, 1871 - Fiesole, 1946) was an Italian writer, art critic, journalist and aphorist. In 1920 he founded his art magazine, Dedalo (Milan, 1920-1933), in which he deals with the history of ancient and modern art. Here intellectuals like Bernard Berenson, Matteo Marangoni, Piero Jahier, Antonio Maraini, Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli, Pietro Toesca, Lionello Venturi and Roberto Longhi collaborate. Ojetti inaugurates a new magazine, Pegaso (Florence, 1929-1933), then the literary magazine Pan. Between 1926 and 1927 he was editor of Corriere della Sera. He is among the signatories of the Manifesto of Fascist intellectuals in 1925 and was appointed Academic of Italy in 1930. He was a member of the board of directors of the Italian Encyclopedia until 1933. Ojetti organizes numerous art exhibitions and gives life to important editorial initiatives.

Ancient Document of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany Leopold II, Italy
Located in Prato, Tuscany
We kindly suggest you read the whole description, because with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. The ancient, original document of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany was framed, in recent times, by a skilled Florentine master craftsman who used a frame in precious wood and painted gold. The "Notification" was a public notice issued by the authority to bring to the attention of the population or of the institutions or persons concerned a legislative situation, an administrative act, or a declaration of intent by the authority itself. In 1838 (the year of our document) Italy, still divided into Kingdoms, States, Ducats, was pervaded by a certain form of reformism; the different dukes, princes, etc. flaunting modernism, various programs begin to develop the economy, make the administration efficient, change some laws, intervene in the territory with infrastructures, such as roads, canals, and railways. For this reason, more professionalism, experience, and technical preparation were required for all operators who had to contribute to this change. In the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the Grand Duke Leopold II...

Two Typed Letters Signed (TLS) by T. S. Eliot
Located in Middletown, NY
Two one-page letters on Faber & Faber stationery, SIGNED by T. S. Eliot. The first, dated 1 December 1949 is double sided, 10 1/4 x 8 inches (266 x 204 mm) in envelope 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (110 x 133 mm). The second is dated 23 August 1950, one sided, 8 x 6 7.8 inches (204 x 174 mm) in envelope 4 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (110 x 133 mm). Typed in black and red ink, central vertical and horizontal folds, with no sign of wear. The accompanying envelopes show minor signs of wear and the back flap of the first envelope is partially torn. Fine. These two typewritten letters were addressed to Robert Cecil Bald (1901 – 1965), an Australian scholar of English Literature, who taught at Cornell University starting in 1937 and then at the University of Chicago from 1952 to 1965. They attest to a cordial exchange between a poet and a scholar, and the rich network of contacts that Eliot had both as an author and as the long-time editorial director at Faber & Faber in London (1925-1965). In the first letter, dated 1 December 1949 with a Cornell University address, Eliot declines an offer...
