This watercolor captures the quiet beauty of an untouched landscape within the Smoky Mountains. Soft greens and gentle yellows stretch across the field, dotted with delicate purple wildflowers. In the distance, hazy blue-gray peaks dissolve into the sky, evoking a sense of calm and reflection.
About the Artist
Artist Judy Mudd paints vibrant watercolor scenes, often depicting barns and the countryside. "It's more than just painting a subject; it's about expressing a feeling," says Judy. Her chosen medium presents a challenge with its spontaneous movement, use of gravity, and drying stages, which she finds both fascinating and thrilling. Judy enjoys incorporating mystery and detail into her compositions, striving not to reveal everything and allowing the viewer to interpret her works. Raised in an artistic family, Judy learned drawing from her mother, shaping her lifelong passion for the craft. Her family tradition of artistry traces back to 1619 through her ancestor, Otto Marseus van Schrieck, a renowned oil painter in Amsterdam. Judy's creative process begins with gathering reference material during excursions, where she sketches and photographs various scenes. She operates from her primary studio in the spacious basement of her home, along with a mobile setup for outdoor or classroom sessions. Beyond her practice, Judy conducts painting workshops and classes, watches sports, and enjoys dining out with her family.

Judy Mudd
Judy Mudd, creating a work of art means much more than simply reproducing something she sees. “It is more than painting a subject, it is expressing a feeling,” she explains. Mudd develops her paintings with thorough reconnaissance work. She goes out on photo shoots in a variety of atmospheric conditions, sketches outdoors, takes notes and completes color and values studies. From there, back in the studio, she lets the paintbrush guide her. Outside of painting, Mudd also leads watercolor workshops and runs a real estate business with her husband.

Drawn to the repeating horizontal lines of the distant trees, rock wall, and water, artist Thomas Hoerber captures the scene with watercolor. Two boats rest peacefully by a dock along the Channel Islands in Ventura County, California. The sunlight provides a contrast between the whites of the vessels and the colors of the sea.
About the Artist

"I am drawn to the historical and the weathered because I find beauty in their character," says Thomas.
