Limited Edition Ceramic Plate. Artist Signature Fired into Plate.
Artist signature fired into the plate on the back and numbered 59 from the edition of only 510.
10 inches diameter
Unframed
This striking limited edition, signed and numbered bowl/plate was handmade in southern Italy by master artisans near Vietri sul Mare. It was designed by renowned American artist Mike Bidlo. The stated edition is 510 - but it was no completed due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, so far fewer were made. From the late 1990s through the millenium. Buon Ricordo America, Inc. commissioned famous artists, including Bidlo to design plates for their flagship restaurants as special one-time only charitable fundraiser. Bidlo's designed the present work for the renowned Italian restaurant Il Toscanaccio. Bidlo's design depicts one of the restaurant's signature dishes, Pappa Al Pomodoro and includes the recipe for the dish printed around the rim of the plate. This plate is a real collector's item -- and difficult to find -- it was created in a limited edition of only 510 and never mass marketed. The artist's signature is fired into the plate on the verso (back) and numbered from the limited edition of 510. Unfortunately, the project ended after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in NY, which affected many of the company's restaurants.
These plates were made in conjunction with Buon Ricordo America, Inc., an offshoot of the Italian restaurant union, Buon Ricordo (Unione Ristoranti del Buon Ricordo). The union has a long tradition of commissioning handmade plates that represent the essence of each of their member restaurants by artisans throughout Italy. The plates capture the essence of each restaurant’s local specialty, and the decoration is embellished with references to the restaurant, its local territory and products. The rim of each plate bears the name of the restaurant and the town or village it is in.
This plate was made from local clay from a quarry in Ogliara, a few kilometres from Vietri. After biscuit firing they are coated and decorated by hand by skilled craftsmen using a carbon “dusting” technique similar to that once used for Renaissance fresco painting. Once the plates were decorated they are glazed and fired for a second time to fix their vivid colors. In the late 1990s through the early 2000s, Buon Ricordo America, Inc. collaborated with some of America's most prominent artists, like Bidlo, to make a series of plates for iconic restaurants throughout the United States.
The verso (back) of the plate has the artist's plate signature, stamps of the manufacturer, the edition number, and also reads as follows:
"Limited edition designed by the artist to benefit charitable organizations dedicated to feeding needy homebound elderly persons and helping children at risk from abuse and disease."
"The artist does not derive any income from the sale of this plate."
"Microwave, oven and dishwasher safe."

Makes a terrific gift. This beautiful, limited edition, extremely rare, plate signed and numbered bowl/plate was handmade in southern Italy by master artisans near Vietri sul Mare. The edition is 510 - but the reason one rarely sees this on the market is because only about half that amount were said to have been created, and the remaining ones were lost after 9/11; the plan was to create a second batch after these sold out. That was in the year 2000. Then in 2001 terrorists struck the World Trade Center. All marketing efforts ceased. It is not even known if the other plates from this edition are still around - but they are rarely found on the marketplace. It was designed by the internationally renowned American artist Peter Halley. In 2000, Buon Ricordo...

Cindy Sherman Biography:
Born in 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Cindy Sherman lives and works in New York NY. Her ground-breaking photographs have interrogated themes around representation and identity in contemporary media for over four decades. Coming to prominence in the late 1970s with the Pictures Generation group alongside artists such as Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Louise Lawler, Sherman studied art at Buffalo State College in 1972 where she turned her attention to photography. In 1977, shortly after moving to New York, Sherman began her critically acclaimed Untitled Film Stills. A suite of 69 black and white portraits, Untitled Film Stills sees Sherman impersonate a myriad of stereotypical female characters and caricatures inspired by Hollywood pictures, film noir, and B movies. Using a range of costumes, props and backdrops to manipulate her own appearance and to create photographs resembling promotional film images, the series explores the tension between artifice and identity in consumer culture which has preoccupied the artist’s practice ever since.
Sherman continued to channel and reconstruct familiar personas known to the collective psyche, often in unsettling ways. In 1981, the artist created her Centerfolds, a series of photographic double spreads inspired by men’s erotic magazines...

WHAT IS A CYANOTYPE?
cyan = blue
type = print
Cyanotype is a historic photographic processes, invented in 1842 and used by Anna Atkins–the first female photographer. The process involves coating watercolor paper with light-sensitive chemistry made of iron salts. Photographic negatives are laid on top, exposed in the sunlight, and then washed in water to develop into the deep Prussian-blue unique to cyanotypes. Brings a moment of beauty and conversation to any space.
