About the Item

Marco Silombria Large Gay Erotic Centaur Plate. Mythology, Pop Art, 2004 Large hand-painted ceramic charger by Italian Pop Art artist Marco Silombria (Savona, 1936 – Albissola, 2017), titled Playing with Centaur and dated 2004, hand-signed Silombria 04. Diameter: 32 cm (approximately 12.59 inches). Made in Albissola at atelier Ernan. This unique piece belongs to Silombria’s series of mythological ceramics exploring Ancient Greek legends through an openly gay erotic lens. The centaur — half man, half horse — and Chiron, the wise mentor figure, appear here as playful symbols of the artist’s passion for the idealized male body, classical heroism, and myth reimagined in a modern Pop Dada style. About Marco Silombria: A painter, sculptor, and acclaimed advertising designer, Silombria worked in Turin from the 1960s onward, creating major campaigns for Fiat (including the Fiat 127), Gallo Rice, and other Italian icons. From the 1980s, he focused on explicit homoerotic themes, reinterpreting Dionysian and Olympian myths with bright, joyful sensuality, drawing inspiration from Matisse, Piero Manzoni, and Warhol. He was a prominent activist for gay rights, contributing art and graphics to F.U.O.R.I., Italy’s first homosexual association, and supporting the birth of the first gay film festival, From Sodom to Hollywood. This centaur plate is an authentic expression of Silombria’s erotic mythological universe — a striking statement for any collector of 20th-century Italian art or LGBTQ+ cultural history.
