About the Item

A French Mid Century glazed ceramic bowl by Suzanne Ramie. Faint impressed marks for Madoura and Grand Feu as well as decorator's mark. Created at the time Ramie was starting her artistic liaison with Pablo Picasso which would have such a fundamental effect on ceramic art in the 20th century. A jewel of an object, perfect in its form and simplicity. Ramie has created a simple deep bowl with twisted three cord handles, like a classical Roman or Greek vessel she was inspired by her deep knowledge of archaic ceramics, particularly pre-Columbian ones. She has then added a simple mottled grey/brown finish and on top of that a beautiful pearlescent glaze. A really beautiful and tactile object, a perfect example of 'less is more' by an artist at the height of her craft. Suzanne Ramié – Douly was born in Lyon in 1905 and trained at the École des beaux-arts de Lyon in the decoration and ceramics sections. She began her career as a textile designer in Lyon before moving to Provence in the mid-1930s. She opened her own workshop in Vallauris in 1938, the Madoura workshop, an acronym composed of the first letters of the house words, Douly and Ramié. She became one of Vallauris’ key figures. It is impossible to speak of Madoura without mentioning the presence of Picasso in Vallauris. Interested in ceramics as a new field of experimentation and appreciating the quality of Madoura's works at the Nerolium Exhibition in 1947, he visited her workshop. Fascinated, he settled in Vallauris to continue working. Madoura introduced him to all the processes he quickly enriched with his own inventions. Picasso decorated, modeled, and sculpted his pieces on turned shapes. He later entrusted Madoura with the production of certain series, which she personally executed based on the originals. The Picassian adventure had the impact we all know, and the workshop soon became a meeting and experiment place for the most famous painters and writers, also drawn to ceramics. Her influence on Picasso’s ceramicist activity is certain. The work of Suzanne Ramié, who knew how to break away from the local tradition of potters at an early stage, revisits popular art by bringing new and modern energy. Then the forms become more personal playing between naturalistic themes and the abstract. The richness of the enamels also shows the technicality of this ceramicist.
