For me, the creative process is not an aesthetic act, but rather research. I have been looking for my own way to reconstruct the spiritual body. For years I have been employing two creative methods that I would, following Wassily Kandinsky, call "impressions" and "improvisation". I love working from nature while allowing myself a certain state of freedom from the necessity of literally documenting what I see, nonetheless, my presence at a sight at a moment remains its great importance. Wassily Kandinsky in his work Concerning the Spiritual in Art calls these states "impressions". I get inspired by the texture and energy of the human body, its gracefulness, and the pulsation of a biological form. At such a moment, I work under the impression of momentary emotions, trusting in gesture, in my mood, and my sense of color. The second approach is psychological diving, when I immerse myself in my intuitive, letting my hand follow up the spontaneous and visualizing it. Kandinsky defines this method as "improvisation". For me, the bizarre interaction of social stereotypes, behavior patterns, and natural reactions in the depth of the human subconscious remains a mystery. Where is a genuine me? How much "white" and how much "black" are inside my consciousness? What is the dark side of my nature? How to distinct my true nature from a product of upbringing, of the traditions of my family, the society, the era? Maybe this "black" side is not so awful as it is widely assumed, but, on the contrary, the most valuable le noir gilt, the most precious gift, and this "white" cannot be taken as my identity at all, but barely as a matrix, a mold created by the social system? In my creative practice, I work on solving this problem primarily for my own self utilizing various techniques and materials. Even working in the open air, I try finding out about the inner, hidden structure of the surrounding space…

"Aquatic Forest" Contemporary Large Scale Abstract Painting, violet, turquoise
By Debra Drexler
Located in New York, NY
This is a large scale, contemporary abstract painting by the New York/ Hawaiian artist, Debra Drexler. Vertical elongated forms in rose pink, mauve, lavender and turquoise blue rise over a layered field of cream white brushed with violet. Washes of red and orange fade into hot pink in this vibrant abstract painting by the artist. You can see the influence of tropical colors in this canvas and a wistful yearning for the beach and the sea.
Debra Drexler is an American painter, installation artist, curator and professor. Her work is informed both by participating in the contemporary resurgence of abstraction coming out of New York, and by living in the Post Colonial Pacific since 1992. She has participated in over thirty solo and over 100 group exhibitions in national and international venues including Front Room Gallery, Exit Art, The Drawing Center, White Box-The Annex, Art Finance Partners, Van Der Plas Gallery, Sideshow Gallery, and Denise Bibro Gallery in New York, as well The Honolulu Museum of Art and Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Debra Drexler is a Professor at the University of Hawaii, where she is Chair of the Drawing and Painting Area. She maintains studios in Brooklyn, NY and on the island of Oahu in Hawai’i. Debra Drexler's most recent work is highly experimental large-scale abstract painting. In a recent review of a two-person exhibition (Whitehot Magazine,2017) Drexler's work as clearly referencing the long tradition of American abstraction and the established legacy of the New York School. The reviewer, Jonathan Goodman, described the work as a “new non-objectivity” that comes out of the current moment. He states that Drexler's painting “quite accurately describes the spirit of abstract art today, in which painting is struggling to break free of the constraints of time."
Debra Drexler frequently uses hot pink, a color with heavily gendered associations. Her hot pink brushstrokes...
