About the Item

On offer is a vintage American wood wall hanging featuring a powerful bison. If you have encountered such an animal, perhaps in Yellowstone looking at you as it crosses in front of your car, or even on the back trails of Santa Catalina Island, you can appreciate how massive and potentially fierce this subject appears in life. With an estimated 30 to 60 million buffalo roaming North America before guns, the animal remains a significant symbol associated with the American West. Accordingly, it is often featured in various forms of American “Tramp Art.” The creator of this piece, only identified as J.C.W. on the panel’s verso, employed marquetry, an intricate art form where pieces of veneer (thin slices of wood) are cut and inlaid into a surface to form decorative patterns or scenes. The creation of marquetry like this requires considerable skill and patience, as each piece of wood must be meticulously cut and fitted to form the complete picture, often employing various wood species to achieve depth and texture. Further, the artist specifically chose the varying colors and grains of different wood types to maximize the contrasting tones that form the bison and its landscape in the image. For example, American Black Walnut, could have been used for the rich browns of the bison's darker features, figured or burl veneers suggesting the bison’s curly matted fur. Whereas Maple or Sycamore could have been chosen for the lighter parts of the landscape, sky, or highlights on the bison. Now, isn’t there a perfect spot for this piece in your Jackson Hole place? Signature: J.C.W. ’35 verso. The remaining numbers, upper left verso, represent the unframed and framed measurements in inches.
