About the Item
Inspired by East Asian Sumi ink drawings, George McLeod wanted to find a photographic way of producing intricately detailed images. As with Sumi ink drawing, fire is both controllable, and unpredictable. The painter controls the brush, however, the bristles add randomness. A fire can be set up, lit, and to an extent controlled, yet it's fleeting nature, not to mention it's speed, make for an unpredictable outcome.
Fire is one of the elements of nature and one of the greatest phenomena in the world. It is an event more than it is an object. Familiar to every civilisation throughout history, and yet somehow elusive, fire has always danced between the practical and the magical. Inspiring fear and ritual, allowing food to be cooked, and houses to be burned, this duality of violence and beauty has been central to so much of human culture.
Fire is about heat, warmth, light, passion and knowing, too strong and it burns, too weak and all is desolate. It is mesmerising and sometimes hypnotic, there is something magnetic and contemplative within.
Capturing these images at a speed of 1/8000th of a second, a side of fire is revealed that, previous to the invention of photography, was always just beyond reach, regardless of the countless hours humans have spent gazing into it.
About the Artist
George McLeod is a London-based fine art and fashion photographer. After building a darkroom in his dad’s attic when he was 16, he went on to study photography at Nottingham Trent University, from which he graduated in 2003. For a while after, he strayed from his original focus as he pursued a career in writing music for TV and film – though he continued to shoot fashion editorials in his spare time for brands such as Louis Vuitton, Prada, Fendi and Bvlgari, among others. In 2019, after finding inspiration for a fine art photography project, he decided to further dedicate himself to the medium. He is currently developing a practice in which he can combine his love for photography with his passion for short story writing and music.
His love for painting has a major influence on his work, as does his lifelong fascination with science. McLeod has been the recipient of numerous photographic awards and his work has been acquired by various private estates and art collection.

George McLeod is a London based fine art and fashion photographer. He built a darkroom in his attic when he was 16 and went on to study for a degree in photography, graduating in 2003. In 2015, after taking a longer than expected break from the subject, he fell deeply back in love with it and has been rapidly expanding his photographic ambitions ever since. Having established a close relationship with London based publication, Luxure Magazine, he has been trusted to produce fashion editorials for the world’s leading brands with very few restrictions. However, his lifelong passion for painting led him back to the word of fine art photography, and after a series of commissions this is now the focus of his work. McLeod has been the recipient of numerous photographic awards and his work has been acquired by various private estates and art collections.

Burnt Place 03 - After the fire swept through, the forest was left scorched and barren. The ground is still warm and the unstirring air is thick with the scent of charred wood. Scorched, lifeless pines stand solemn and mournful in the shadows of the Burnt Place.

The Luminograms are made from the most simple of procedures - directing light onto silver gelatin photo paper. However, it is that simplicity that allows Jackson to adapt his own way of thinking into the making of the finished piece. As he says, it's as close as he can get in photography to painting.
After moving to Wales in 2007, Michael Jackson spent the next eight years creating an extensive study of a single local beach - Poppit Sands. After years of examining the beach, he realised that in effect he was studying himself and his reaction to the beach - rather than the physical landscape. He then started looking at the beach as simply a way of dividing up the camera frame - the lines and curves and focal points. It was during the long period of producing Poppit Sands prints in the darkroom that he discovered how to start making luminograms.
"I feel strongly that the luminograms represent a form of moulded light. You use your process to direct and mould the light and the paper receives it in its own magical way and translates that into a form that seems fantastical but also it has one foot in reality. The piece itself so often seems like a photograph of a sculpture, when it fact it is neither. I imagine that I am taking something that you cannot feel and I am making it appear in a seemingly three dimensional form that is balanced and controlled. Just like sculpting clay." Michael G Jackson...
