Four Lenticular Prints Edition of 3 2014 Mary Ann Strandell is a painter of note who has exhibited widely in art galleries, museums, art spaces, and art fairs. Her works are a movable terrain between image, media, and their myriad histories. In her paintings she blends utopias from California Moderne and asian-inspired chinoiserie. The subjects are light, airy canvases of birds, figurines, Modernist architectural spaces and cosmic chandeliers. Often she’ll use black sumi ink drawing on top of these subjects. In her 3D prints, she plays off of the visual complexity of her paintings and adds these elements interspersed in the hyperbolic constructions of 3D lenticular prints. Her work combines these two dense spaces: a traditional studio practice and in the 3D prints, her experimentation with digital technologies and new media. There is something of the Pop Baroque about her work. It is at once contemporary and fresh with a mood of the familiar and of history. Mary Ann Strandell has exhibited her work in national and international venues including the inaugural Art Paris Abu Dhabi Art Fair with The Deborah Colton Gallery, 2007. As well as FIAC-Paris with Michael Steinberg Fine Arts. 2013 finds Strandell launching a new direction with two solo shows that bring new territory to her interests with technology and the internet. Both solo shows, Orient Shift and Cloud, take on the singular presence of place, action, and object with imagery derived of technology and commerce, through technology and with technology. Her 2012 New York installation for SYMBIOTAXIPLASM Exhibition, curated by Savannah Spirit at SS PRojects, was selected as “Pick of the Week” by David Cohen, Art Critical Magazine, NYC. The 2011-2012 traveling solo exhibition, The Movable Salon and Other Frontiers, was exhibited at The Washington Pavilion of the Arts, and The Dahl Art Center, received a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council. Her 2010 solo exhibition Index of Mediated Spaces, guest curated by Shannon Fitzgerald, at JRB Art at the Elms, Oklahoma City was widely reviewed in Oklahoma, Kansas CIty, and Texas publications. Strandell solo exhibition The Movable Salon, was a duo site installation at the Byron C. Cohen gallery and at Debbie Glassberg’s PreFab house, HomeContained, Kansas City, MO Both included an expansive forty foot sumi ink drawing interspersed with 3D lenticular prints. Strandell’s 2009 exhibition, Between Plane and Perception opened at the Deborah Colton Gallery, Houston, and was reviewed by Catherine Anspon in Paper City Magazine. In 2008 her work was included in Lost Horizon, an exhibit of utopic architectural space, University Massachusetts at Amherst in the Herter Gallery, curated by David Gibson. She participated in KC in LA at Milo Gallery, Los Angeles, CA, curated by Ashley Emenegger. Her 2008 solo exhibit at Wells College, The String Room Gallery, Aurora, NY was curated by William Gannis. Her 2006 solo NY exhibition, Moveable Terrain at Michael Steinberg Fine Art was reviewed in The New Yorker magazine and The Village Voice. The Contemporary Art Museum in St. Louis, included Strandell in Master Works; St. Louis Collects, curated by Paul Ha and Shannon Fitzgerald and Andrea Green. Artists Suzanne Anker and Giovanni Frazzetto curated her into Neuroculture: Visual Arts and the Brain, at The Westport Art Center, Westport, CT, 2006. In the fall of 2005 she did a two person show with Lowell Boyers, In Sight / In Situ, at Panorama Art, in Cologne, Germany an offsite exhibition of Gallerie K-99. Strandell was recently awarded a South Dakota Humanities Council grant, 2012, She was a visiting artist and lecturer at MCAD, Mpls. MN 2012. In 2008 she was awarded a residency at Art Omi International, and a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Fellowship Award. Some additional awards include the Katherine Van Meter Sadock Lecture Award from Union College, Schenectedy, NY, 2002. In 1996 she was awarded Arts Midwest National Endowment for the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship Award for Painting. She was also awarded the Artworks Fund, Arts Midwest National Endowment for the Arts in 1997, 1998 and 1999. She received a Residency Fellowship at The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, NE (1996). In 2005 she delivered her paper, “Through the Lens, the Viewing Device in Spatially Interactive Work’ at the College Arts Association, and “Kepler’s Delirium” at the Southern Graphics Conference, 2004. She is collected by the Fidelity Inc. London, New Jersey, and Fidelity Inc. New Mexico, As well as The Nelson Atlkins Museum, Kansas City, MO, The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Overland Park, Kansas, Time Equities, New York, the De Rosa Preserve, Napa, California, The Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, KS, The Hallmark Corporate Collection, Kansas CIty MO, The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Chicago, IL, US Sprint Collections, Kansas CIty, MO, Brandies Investments, Del Mar, CA, The Amity Art Foundation, Woodbridge, CT, Polsinelli, DE and MO, and many others. Mary Ann Strandell received her MA and MFA at the University of New Mexico, 1993 after a Fellowship at Tamarind Institute, a BFA from the University of South Dakota cum laude, a Fellowship in conservation practices at The W.H. Over Museum, Vermillion SD, a study abroad program in London and Ireland; she also studied Psychology at Syracuse University, NY.
