An original silver gelatin black and white photograph by Agence Meurisse Photographer. Car race in Boulogne sur Mer, France, circa 1911. The French pilot Rene Thomas is speeding in its Delage car. Features: Original Silver Gelatin Print Photograph framed. Press Photograph. Press Agency: Agence Meurisse Photographer: Meurisse Title: Car Race, 1911. Provenance: Private collection. Frame Size: 15.75 in high (40 cm) x 15.75 in wide (40 cm) x 0.63 in deep (1.5 cm). Image Size: 4.61 in high (11.7 cm) x 6.46 in wide (16.4 cm). The ink stamp at the back reads Meurisse. The hand-written caption at the back reads 1911 - 907411. There is also a hand-written comment at the back that reads: "Coupe des voiturettes legeres a Boulogne sur Mer. Thomas en vitesse sur Delage." (Cup of light cars in Boulogne sur Mer. Thomas at speed on Delage). The number "13632" is written in the negative, and another number has been erased. The last picture shows a close view of Rene Thomas (we do not own this last picture). About: René Thomas (1886 - 1975) One of the top French racing drivers in the early years of the XX Century, René Thomas was born in Périgueux, department of Dordogne, in central-western France, in 1886. While working in Paris as a mechanic, he started his racing career participating in motorcycle races. René Thomas became a test driver for the Société Delage Automobiles, founded in 1905 by Louis Delâge at Levallois, France, near Paris. In July 1908, Thomas entered the Course de Dieppe and took Delage's maiden racing victory at an average speed of 85 km/h (53 mi/h). Several Grand Prix victories followed for the team, with Thomas and his teammates Albert Guyot and Paul Bablot, in 1911 at Boulogne, 1913 at Amiens, and 1914 at Lyon. René Thomas piloted Antoinette's aircraft in early European aviation competitions. On 01 October 1910, he was involved in the world's first mid-air collision during an air meeting, when his Antoinette monoplane fell onto the Farman biplane of Scottish aviator Captain Bertram Dickson, during the "Circuito Aereo Internazionale di Milano," at the Aerodromo di Taliedo, near Milan, Italy. Thomas was not seriously injured, but Dickson suffered internal injuries from which he never recovered and died in 1913. Delâge decided to go to America in 1914 for the Indianapolis 500 and entered two cars for Thomas and Guyot. European automobiles and drivers dominated the fourth edition of the Indianapolis 500, held on Saturday, 30 May 1914. Frenchman Georges Boillot qualified his Peugeot at a stunning 99.86 mi/h (160.67 km/h), some 11 mi/h faster than the previous record. After the start of the race, the American Howdy Wilcox led the field on the first lap. But the rest of the day was dominated by European drivers who scored the first four positions at the finish line, with newcomer René Thomas in his Delage #16, race winner, leading 102 of 200 laps. He took the lead after Boillot suffered a blown tire and finished over seven minutes ahead of second-placed Arthur Duray of Belgium in a Peugeot. Thomas' teammate Guyot was third, and another Frenchman, Jules Goux, the 1913 winner, finished in fourth place in a Peugeot. Barnstormer Barney Oldfield finished fifth in a Stutz as the highest-finishing American. René Thomas returned to Indianapolis three more times, the first in 1919, after the end of World War I. Driving a 4.8-liter 8-cylinder Ballot, he finished eleventh but became the first pole position winner to post a speed faster than 100 mi/h, marking 104.78 mi/h (168.59 km/h), nearly five miles-per-hour more than the old record. In 1920, he drove his Ballot to an impressive second place, six minutes behind Gaston Chevrolet's Frontenac, and in 1921, he was tenth at the wheel of a Sunbeam. In the 1919 Targa Florio in Sicily, a Ballot vehicle driven by René Thomas comfortably led the race until the final lap, in which André Boillot in a Peugeot managed to bypass him. Thomas retired before reaching the finish line. On 06 July 1924, René Thomas established a new World Land Speed Record at Arpajon, in the Île-de-France region, at the wheel of a V12 Delage 10,700 cm3, at an average speed of 230,634 km/h (143.34 mi/h). In the late 1920s, Thomas quit active racing and became race director for team Delage. In 1973, when he was 87, René Thomas returned to Indianapolis to make a series of parade laps in his winning Delage before the start of the 1973 Indianapolis 500. He passed away on Tuesday, 23 September 1975, in Colombes, department of Hauts-de-Seine near Paris, France, at age 89. (credit: motorsportmemorial site)
