About the artist: Albert Monier (1915-1998) worked outside the established world of commercial printing, creating his postcards on photographic paper in his lab. Using a small number of images, he managed to gain a popular foothold in the postcard photography world, then dominated by Editions Yvon. Some of the most popular postcards of Paris during the 1950s and 1960s featured the black and white photography of Albert Monier. He had a special empathy for the men of the working class and those even poorer, and when people appear in his photography, they are more likely to be homeless or extremely poor than to be nattily dressed. About: Montmartre is a district of the 18th arrondissement of Paris (France) dominated by the Sacré-Coeur Basilica. Since the nineteenth century, it has hosted many artists, including Picasso and Modigliani, and has become the symbol of the bohemian lifestyle. Until 1860, Montmartre was a commune in the Seine department. Paris annexed the town that year under the Capital Extension Ordinance. The territory of the former Montmartre was integrated into what became the 18th arrondissement of Paris, baptized "des Buttes-Montmartre" and made up of the administrative districts of Grandes-Carrières, Clignancourt, Goutte-d'Or, and Chapel. Like the Marais district, Montmartre today has no precise geographical limit: it is a historic Parisian district but not an administrative one. This popular tourist area in northern Paris is known for its narrow steep streets surrounded by lengthy staircases and is home to the capital's highest point, Montmartre Hill. (Credit: Wikipedia).
