Andrew Buck has always been inspired by landscapes and their ability to embody both abstract and tangible characteristics. Photographed in a number of rock quarries on the East Coast, the series of modern yet graphic Rockface prints are examples of man’s determination to reconfigure natural landscapes to cater to our specific needs. Buck photographs the large walls of rock that have been blasted with dynamite and eliminates any evidence of scale to produce a strikingly abstract image. Light and shadow plays on the rock's surface, created a view that is highly textured and boldly contrasted in black and white grey scale. About the artist: I made my first photograph with a Brownie at age 7. My father, who had photographed and done his own processing and printing starting in the late 1910s, gave Brownies to my sister and me at the same time, probably to eliminate jealousy or competition. I remember being fascinated by that little black box, pushing the white button on the side and waiting anxiously to see the results. My inspiration is almost always the landscape. My use of the word 'landscape' is based in the writings of John Brinkerhoff Jackson. He went to the source word, the German landschaften, which referred to that which results when 'man' reconfigures or uses the land, in essence creating his own landscape on the natural landscape. It is always with an eye for the abstract. However, in many series, it is also documentary of a place. While the focus on abstraction is most evident in the Rockface series, the series links the two themes in my work: All of the rock faces I have photographed were created by blasting through hills for construction or for granite and trap rock quarrying. The images are abstract, but they are also concerned with how our impact on the natural landscape creates an entirely new landscape. To borrow a theory first voiced by the art historian Meyer Shapiro, the 'object matter' of these images is rock faces, but the 'subject matter' is abstraction. **The image pictured in this listing is framed in a custom black metal frame. It is dry mounted with no glass (or plexi glazing). There is a protective spray applied to the surface that protects the print from dust, etc..

Street Dance 3.12 x 16 (Graphic Abstract Black & White Grid Urban Photograph)
By Elliott Kaufman
Located in Hudson, NY
archival chromogenic digital print image size: 19 x 23 inches unframed Elliott Kaufman describes New York City as a laboratory in constant movement. In his series “Street Dance,” Kaufman photographs repetitive actions of passersby – such as riding a bicycle or entering a subway station – from a single vantage point and arranges the images in a grid. Key to his series, Kaufman explains, was calculating how changing light would affect the environment. “The bicycles had to be back-lit at the very end of the day,” he says. “The subway steps were calculated so that the light would cast perfect north/south shadows.” He also shot a varying number of exposures at each scene to relay the “staccato rhythm” he sought – as many as 225. “The camera catches the commonality of movement,” he says, “until what endures is a patter of dance and motion.” A number of artists have led him in this direction, including the Bauhaus and the collaborative media which they pioneered, the 1977 film Powers Of Ten, which depicts the relative scale of the universe in factors of ten, Mike Figgis...
