Arthur recalls: “It was soon to be the Queen’s Birthday and the Coldstream Guards were practising along Horseguards Parade. I became transfixed with the performance given by Drum Major Kirk and managed to capture this powerful photograph of him screaming out orders using a very long lens.”
Published text: The voice that keeps No.10 on its toes [Published 15/05/1970] There’s not much danger of anyone oversleeping at 10 Downing Street these days. Not with this fellow going full blast. Senior Drum Major of the Coldstream Guards is the chap who shouts the orders for troops rehearsing for the Queen’s Birthday Parade on Horse Guards Parade – outside the back door of No.10. Rehearsals for the big parade on June 13 start at 7am most days and they reckon that, wind-assisted, Drum Major Kirk’s bark can rattle the windows at the Premier’s place. Mr Wilson is always up at this hour, as it happens. But ever quick to score a point, he says: “I have put up with it for the last five years. I can put up with it for the next five.”

The Coldstream Guards is a part of the Guards Division, Foot Guards regiments of the British Army. It is the oldest regiment in the Regular Army in continuous active service, originating in Coldstream, Scotland in 1650 when General George Monck founded the regiment. It is one of two regiments of the Household Division that can trace its lineage to the New Model Army, the other being the Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons).

Arthur Steel
Photographer Arthur Steel's archive of iconic images is nothing short of fabulous, and counts David Walliams as a collector. His most famous photograph is arguably of Diana and Charles's kiss on the balcony on their wedding day. He was one of just a handful of photographers who were on the "royal rota" that day.
Regarded as a highly respected editor and Fleet Street photographer, Arthur photographed a vast array of celebrities over the years. In his images one can see how at ease his subjects felt in his company, such as Eric Morecambe within his study, Elton John at home with his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, George Best surrounded by bubble bath or even the "Iron Lady" Margaret Thatcher in her bedroom applying makeup.
Today, Steel oversees and authenticates the production of his extremely rare photographic limited edition prints from negatives only recently unearthed from his personal treasured archive.
Arthur's collector base continues to grow internationally. Notably, his work is found at Gordon Ramsay's restaurant in Mayfair, London, as well as Gordon Ramsay restaurants in Kuala Lumpur and Macao.
