Balthasar Burkhard was born on December 24th 1944 in Berne, Switzerland. He lived and worked in Berne, and passed away in 2010.
“Balthasar Burkhard is the best photographic artist in the world”, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Director Serpentine Gallery, London. Subtly using black and white, and very rarely colour, Burkhard was best known for his large-format monochromatic photographic series of monumental, statuesque bodyparts, or sweeping city and desert scapes. Usually in close-up and out of context, or vast and majestic, the spatial nature of the object photographed – its presentation is heightened by the enlargement and frequent fragmentation – saturate space, making any withdrawal from it impossible. Breathtaking yet calm alike, both generous and fleeting, Burkhard shows us a universal poetry.
His works are part of major collections, such as the Kunstmuseum Bern, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire in Geneva, Kunstmuseum Luzern, Fondation Cartier, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Kunsthaus Zürich, Deutsche Bank, or the UBS Art Collection. Burkhard worked at the Kunsthalle Bern, closely cooperating with its curator at the time, the legendary Harald Szeemann. He has since exhibited around the world in the most prestigious institutions, such as Eloge de l’Ombre, Rath Museum in Geneva, the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Charleroi, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Grenoble, the Helmhaus Zürich, the Kunstmuseum Thun, MAMCO in Geneva, the Kunstmuseum Bern, Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain in Strasbourg, Musée Jenisch in Vevey, and finally, 2009–10, at the Museum Bellpark, Kriens, which would become Burkhard’s last solo exhibition before his untimely death.

Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Brigitte studied at Zurich University and received her MA in Social and Photo History in 1996. In the following years she established herself as an fine art photographer. She moved to New York and received her MFA in Fine Art Photography and Related Media at Parsons The New School of Design in 2007. The main issues in her works lie in her interest in the study of the gaze, the interplay between absence and presence in a photographic image, and the fact that the reading of a photograph is most often triggered by a collective memory. She explores the media itself and its close connection to themes like decay, memory, death and transitoriness.
Brigitte Lustenberger has shown nationally and internationally in both solo and group shows. She had Solo Shows at the Museée de l’Elysée in Lausanne/Switzerland, at Walter Keller’s Scalo Gallery in Zurich and New York, at Le Maillon...
