In May of 1974, Bruce Springsteen performed a show that is considered to be a watershed moment in his career. Having released two albums to date with minimal sales success, he was in danger of being dropped by his record label. Barry Schneier, having seen Bruce Springsteen perform locally in Cambridge, Massachusetts, suggested to concert promoters, Windowpane Productions, they consider booking him for a show. This chance encounter would lead to Bruce and the E Street Band opening for Bonnie Raitt at the Harvard Square Theatre on May 9th - a show which previously was planned with no opening act. In the audience that night was Jon Landau, a music critic for “Rolling Stone” magazine and Cambridge-based “The Real Paper.” What Jon witnessed that night, and would write about afterwards would alter the trajectory of Bruce’s career forever, as well as his own. One line in Landau's review— perhaps the most famous concert review of all time — would reignite support for the artist as it was emblazoned in ads and repeated in the press: “I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen."

Prince 1981 by Tony Mottram
Located in Austin, TX
Prince by photographer Tony Mottram. Taken at the Lyceum, London on 2nd June 1981, during Prince's first ever UK appearance.
Signed limited A2 size print, Edition number 11/100
Tony recalls - I got a call from Jill Furmanovsky saying she’d double booked herself. She had been booked to photograph Bruce Springsteen at Wembley, and some unknown guy at a small venue in The Strand. “She said she would go to the Wembley and asked me to go to photo the other gig. Well it turned out to be Prince at his first ever gig in the UK. Back then nobody was too sure about Prince’s sexuality so I went along to The Strand and assumed he’d be playing at Heaven – a gay venue. I got there, but my name wasn’t on the door which wasn’t too unusual. I talked the security guard around to let me in saying I had to photo this performer who was about to go on stage inside. I got in and realized Prince wasn’t performing there and it was just a normal night in the club. So I had a quick pint of Guinness and left. I had to sprint up the road to the Lyceum knowing that I’d probably miss the support act. I got there in time and got the photos of Prince...

Bruce Springsteen at the Palladium, 1976
By Allan Tannenbaum
Located in White Plains, NY
'Bruce Springsteen at the Palladium,' 1976 by famed American photographer, Allan Tannenbaum. Archival pigment print, 10 x 15 in. (image) on 17 x 22 in. (paper), Ed. of 50.
This black and white photograph captures musician Bruce Springsteen leaning back on fans from railing, between audience and pit, at a performance at The Palladium in NYC on October, 1976. From the artists' 4th hardcover book 'Grit and Glamour: The Street Style, High Fashion, and Legendary Music of the 1970s,' published in 2016. This image was taken during Tannenbaum's tenure at The SoHo Weekly News in New York City from 1973 to 1982 where he served as Chief Photographer and Photo Editor.
Allan Tannenbaum's career in photography spans more than four decades. Born in Passaic, New Jersey, in 1945, he received a B.A. in Art from Rutgers University in 1967, where he photographed for The Targum – the campus newspaper – and made films for his art courses. Gravitating to the nascent art scene in the SoHo district of Manhattan in 1972, Tannenbaum worked as a taxi driver and bartender while looking for work as a photographer. In 1973, when the SoHo Weekly News commenced publication, Tannenbaum became the Photo Editor and Chief Photographer. The newspaper started out as an eight-page free paper, but soon became a popular newsstand seller that rivaled the established Village Voice. Tannenbaum relentlessly covered the art world, music scene, politics, show business, and nightlife until 1982 when the SoHo News folded.
Tannenbaum has also done documentary and feature photography in places like Thailand, Indonesia, Palau, Jordan, Bahrain, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Brazil, Israel, Iceland, and Mexico. He has covered numerous political campaigns, nominating conventions and news stories in the U.S. such as the Oklahoma City bombing and the Columbine massacre. His work has appeared in many photo books and exhibitions, as well as appearing regularly in NEWSWEEK, TIME, LIFE, ROLLING STONE, PARIS MATCH, and STERN. His photographs have graced the covers of TIME three times, and NEWSWEEK five times. He now works as an international photojournalist contributing to various noted publications including Time, Life, and Newsweek. He is the author of three books of his photography, including New York in the 70s (Feierabend, 2003), New York (Feierabend, 2004), and John and Yoko: A New York Love Story...
