About the Item

Nikita Khrushchev in front of Lincoln Memorial, 1959, Washington DC by Burt Glinn is one of the photographer's historical photographs. The portrait is a gelatin silver press print, 10" x 8" with the photographer’s embossed stamp in margin on recto (front of photo) and signed/authenticated by the estate on verso (back). Provenance: Glinn archive Artist's Bio: The late 1950s were particularly important years for Burt Glinn who captured the desegregation of Little Rock High, Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to New York, Nikita Khrushchev in front of the Lincoln Memorial and iconic celebrity portraits, including Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Sammy Davis Jr., and Katharine Hepburn. When Burt Glinn was asked in an interview which of his images he most closely identifies with, Glinn replied that without a doubt it is the picture showing the back of Nikita Khrushchev's head in front of the Lincoln Memorial: "I was late and I couldn't get to where everybody else was, in front of Khrushchev, so I came running up and I was in the back of him. And I looked up and there it was. I got two shots of that and then the scene disintegrated. If I'd been on time I would have gotten a very ordinary picture of Khrushchev and Henry Cabot Lodge looking at this statue of Lincoln. The most important thing that a photographer like me can have is luck." Provenance: Glinn Estate *** Artist’s Bio: "Born 1925 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, photographer Burt Glinn worked for LIFE magazine before joining Magnum photo agency. He photographed personalities throughout the 1950s and 60s, continuing to work commercially and editorially for more than five decades in the US and abroad on assignment, until his death in 2008. The artist photographed revolutionary leader Fidel Castro entrance into Havana, Cuba, celebrity and art luminaries such as Andy Warhol and Helen Frankenthaler. Subject matter included the social scene of the rich, the dirtiness of politics, and the humorous. Glinn received numerous awards for his editorial and commercial photography." *** Available at 99Prints NYC an online art marketplace for today’s collector of contemporary art, works on paper, original and limited edition photography.
