About the Item
Chaco Terada’s work addresses notions of light, time, and space – but in a completely unique fashion. Printed on two layered silk screens bound and separated by cotton rag mats, Chaco’s images literally hold light and space within the picture. Quiet and contemplative, the image changes ever so slightly as you move around it, reacting in space, and allowing cherry blossoms to flutter, water to ripple, and brushstrokes to float as if suspended in air or on water.
Terada's subject matter vacillates from the observation of natural elements to the active practice and expression inherent to the calligraphic brushstroke. Though she draws inspiration from traditional Japanese culture and calligraphy the final result is a modern and personal approach. The creation of the images, populated by her own photographs and expressive ink strokes serve as meditative moments for both the artist and the viewer.
Due to Terada’s painterly process, many of the works are one of a kind.

Chaco Terada
Chaco Terada, originally from Japan, was trained at a young age in the art of calligraphy. When Terada was in her 20s she had the opportunity to work on her calligraphy in ten countries as a part of the cultural exchange programs, Up with People and The Ship for World Youth. When her time with those groups ended she moved to the United States, where she discovered photography and started incorporating it with calligraphy. Terada has led demonstrations and has taught calligraphy workshops at the Dallas Museum of Art, The Crow Asian Art Museum, Greenhill School, and Saint Mark’s School of Texas among others. Terada’s artwork has been exhibited in Dallas, Santa Fe, New York and Los Angeles and Paris.

Off the Grid is the culmination of a six-year photographic journey through Baja, Mexico. Ben Cope and Rowan Daly began their travels in 2014, working their way through the towns of la Salinas, Baja Mar, and Cantamar, down through Ensanada and la Bufadora.
