About the Item

Signed Daido Moriyama photograph: Tokyo 1990: Daido Moriyama Water Flower Shibuya-ku, Tokyo: “When I stepped out onto the veranda that connected to the adjoining bedroom, in front of me was a forest of buildings as far as I could see. Right underneath, a subway train of the Ginza Line was rumbling out from the tunnel, only to disappear again into the belly of the Tokyo Building. In the foreground on the right-hand side, the dome of the planetarium on the rooftop of the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, which no longer exists, was glittering silver. It was a time when I was spending most of my days with a hangover from the previous night’s drinking spree with my friends. Such were the circumstances that this photograph was produced in.”—Daido Moriyama Archival inkjet print. Dimension: 8 x 10 inches including boarders (image size 6.2 x 9.4 inches). Signed and numbered by the artist on the affixed label on reverse; from a limited edition of 70 (plus 5 AP’s). Excellent overall condition. Published by Aperture Foundation NY. Literature: Aperture, issue 129, Fall 1992. Inspired by the likes of Eugène Atget, Weegee, and William Klein, photographer Daido Moriyama has made the city his muse. In Tokyo and other cosmopolitan locales, he documents cultural change and urban chaos in an expressive style all his own. Moriyama was a founder of Japan’s Provoke movement; from 1969 to 1970, the group published an avant-garde magazine that artfully documented the dramatic transformation of 1960s post-war Japan. Moriyama has focused on elements of modernization, the dissolution of traditional Japanese values, and the American military occupation of the country. Typically, the photographer makes grainy, black-and-white, high-contrast images, which he prints himself. He has largely shot with a small handheld automatic camera, rarely with attention to the viewfinder. Moriyama’s work has been acquired for the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the J. Paul Getty Museum, and the Centre Pompidou, among other institutions. Ian produced images over a 35 year career. For most he worked as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer; during his last years concentrated on his personal archive. Ian and his widow Nathalie have worked for many years with alternative printing techniques in their workshop, ISP, creating Platinum Palladium, Silver Gelatin, Lith or Gum Bichromate. This culminated in a large retrospective exhibition in Barcelona which was sponsored by the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation. Platinum Palladium printing is a traditional photographic technique which precedes silver gelatin technique. Many photographers have worked with it in the past as Irvin Penn, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, Robert Mapplethorpe, Sebastiao Salgado o Ormond Gigli with its Platinum with gold leaf print 'Girls in the Windows'. ISP Workshop continues with the work of Ian's widow to create archival pigment prints like this one but also rare and personalized photographs. categories : Black and white photography, 20th. century, Archival pigment print, Monochromatic Art...
