Dora Maar Woman with a Fur Collar in Front of a Peugeot Sign, Paris, (Femme au Col de Fourrure Devant une Enseigne Peugeot, Paris), c. 1935 Vintage unique silver gelatin contact print 2 x 2 1/4 inches Provenance: The Estate of Dora Maar Born Henriette Theodora Markovitch, Dora Maar (b.1907-1997) was a French photographer, poet and painter. She studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and then the Académie Julian in Paris, and went on to become important in Surrealist cafe circles: she had her first publication in the magazine Art et Métiers Graphiques in 1932, and presented her first solo exhibition at the Galerie Vanderberg in Paris. Though Maar is often remembered as Picasso’s romantic partner and muse, her work has recently received renewed critical attention. Her work has been posthumously exhibited at the Haus der Kunst, Munich, the Centre de la Vieille Charité, Marseille, the Centre Cultural Tecla Sala, Barcelona, Centre Pompidou, Paris, and most recently at Tate Modern, in London. A group of vintage contact prints from the 1930s reveals Dora Maar’s sensitivity to juxtapositions of form, surface, and the surreal. Her images - of mannequins, deserted streets, and fractured reflections - offer quiet dislocations of the real. Working with a handheld Rolleiflex, Maar embraced urban life while hinting at its strangeness. Maar’s photographic career was disrupted by the Nazi occupation of Paris, leading to a period of withdrawal and introspection that profoundly shaped the tone of her later work.
