About the Item

silver gelatin print, matted, captioned by hand and hand signed and numbered. B/W photographs documenting Jewish life in Eastern and Central Europe.
Edward Serotta is a journalist, photographer and filmmaker specializing in Jewish life in Central and Eastern Europe. Born in Savannah, Georgia, Edward has worked in Central Europe since 1985. Between 1996 and 1999, he produced three films for ABC News Nightline. Edward has published three books - Out of the Shadows, Survival in Sarajevo and Jews, Germany, Memory. He has contributed to Time Magazine, The L.A.Times, The Washington Post, and other outlets. Ed founded Centropa in 2000.
In the tradition of Roman Vishniac he captures and preserves the memories of a forgotten Judaic Europe. Similar to the works of Frederic Brenner, Shimon Attie and Neil Folberg These are not just artistic but also important documentary work.
The project was underwritten by The Doron Foundation (Tel Aviv) Mordechai Mevorach (director) and The Righteous Persons Foundation (Santa Monica) Steven Spielberg (chairman).
"As a documentary photographer specializing in contemporary Jewish life in Central Europe, when Sarajevo was besieged I wanted to see how a post-Holocaust Jewish community would react to war and "ethnic cleansing'" for the second time in fifty years. I wondered; would all the Jews leave? would those remaining lock their doors, letting their neighbors fight it out among themselves? After all, this was a war between Serbs, Croats and Muslims, in which the Jews play no contentious part. and while the majority of Jews fled the city, a vital core remained to stand with their friends and neighbors. Working together, they have turned history on its head, because for the first time during a modern European war, Jews are saving and protecting Christians and Muslims, wherever, whenever they can." Edward Serotta.
Edward Serotta, founder and director of Centropa was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria. The Austrian Parliament’s President, Barbara Prammer, presented the medal at a ceremony at the Austrian Parliament in Vienna.

Vintage Silver Gelatin Photogapher Nona Hatay
Located in Surfside, FL
Hatay is a visual artist, a healer and a former Rock and Roll photojournalist.
Born in Scotland of a Hungarian physicist/inventor and an English art dealer, she grew up in an international environment. Her father encouraged original thinking and experimentation; her mother nourished her creativity and her intuitive skills. Leaving her home in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, for Munich, Germany, she apprenticed to Bauhaus photographer Frl. Berthe Himmler. The next step was New York City where Hatay began to freelance in all aspects of photography.
It was when she photographed Jimi Hendrix at Madison Square Garden on May 18, 1969 and was inspired by his music that she got a chance to spread her wings artistically. She was initially inspired by his energy, his vision and his originality. "Jimi Hendrix was absolutely amazing - it is not possible to put words to the Experience. He was, and still is, unique. I didn't know at the time I photographed him that he was interested in his music being a healing power. I learned a lot about this aspect of Hendrix about ten years later when I met people who knew him. When they heard how much I was interested in the healing aspects of his music, they shared their stories with me. I used some of this information in my two books, Jimi Hendrix, The Spirit Lives On and Jimi Hendrix, Reflections and Visions".
Nona's experimental techniques were used in her photographs on many other Rock stars, such as Tina Turner, James Brown, and Frank Zappa.
She had a major exhibit of her work in Paris.
