About the Item
Silver Gelatine Print by Erich Andres, 1941.
This black-and-white photograph, taken in 1938, shows a scene from a lighthouse on the island of Amrum, Germany. A man and a young boy are standing on the observation deck of the lighthouse. The man, dressed in a cap and a dark jacket, is using binoculars to look out over the landscape, while the boy, wearing suspenders and a short-sleeved shirt, peers over the railing. Below them stretches a vast expanse of dunes and sandy terrain, with the sea visible on the horizon. The image captures a serene and contemplative moment as both figures gaze over the coastal landscape, possibly surveying the shoreline or enjoying the distant view. The vintage setting and the simplicity of the scene reflect life in the late 1930s.
Andres was born 1905 in Germany and passed away 1992. He started his career as a photographer in 1920. He was one of the first photographers, who used a Leica. His images today are displayed in several museums, for example in the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was a contributor for Edward Steichens Exhibition "The family of man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951.
