About the Item
This black-and-white photograph captures a lively street scene in the Santa Lucia neighborhood of Naples, Italy, in 1954. Two street musicians perform against the worn, textured wall of a building; one plays a trumpet, and the other holds a banjo. A large drum is placed on the ground in front of them, adding a rhythmic element to the ensemble. Several children, dressed in traditional clothes, stand nearby, attentively watching the musicians. Erich Andres was born in Germany in 1905 and passed away in 1992. He began his career as a photographer in 1920 and was one of the first to use a Leica camera. Today, his work is exhibited in several museums, including the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. In 1951, Andres contributed to Edward Steichen's iconic exhibition "The Family of Man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Erich Andres
Erich Andres was born 1905 in Germany and passed away in Hamburg 1992. He started his career as a photographer in 1920. He was one of the first photographers, who used a Leica. He was working with Leni Riefenstahl shooting the Olympic Games in 1936, war a freelance press photographer during the Spanish Civil War. After World War II he worked on reportage photography, for industrial companies and traveled and worked in the USA and Europe. In Hamburg he was known as the man with the leddars. His aim was to use them to get unusual perspectives. His images today are displayed in several museums, for example in the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was a contributor for Edward Steichens Exhibition "The family of man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951.
