About the Item

The black-and-white photo depicts a street scene from San Francisco's Chinatown along Grant Avenue, taken in 1962. The image shows traditional Chinese architectural elements, with a multi-tiered pagoda-style building on the left side, adorned with decorative motifs. A sign on the building reads "Cathay House," likely a restaurant or business in the area. Various vintage cars are visible on the street, adding to the historical feel. Lanterns hang across the street, and a "Parking" sign points toward Mary’s Square Garage. The overall atmosphere captures a vibrant yet classic Chinatown scene, illustrating the cultural and architectural uniqueness of the area. Erich Andres was born in Germany in 1905 and passed away in 1992. He began his career as a photographer in 1920 and was one of the first to use a Leica camera. Today, his work is exhibited in several museums, including the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. In 1951, Andres contributed to Edward Steichen's iconic exhibition "The Family of Man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The print is new, a Fine Art Print on high quality paper (Hahnemühle FineArt Baryta) printed by Whitewall. It comes to you in a tube to keep shipping costs as low as possible.
