About the Item

This black-and-white photograph from the 1950s captures a climber scaling the surface of a monumental rock formation in the American Southwest. The immense rock structure dominates the frame, showcasing intricate layers of sediment that have been shaped over millennia. The climber, dwarfed by the formation's sheer size, appears to examine the unique textures and striations, which are indicative of the region's ancient geological history. The photograph emphasizes the rugged beauty of the desert landscape, with the climber symbolizing both human curiosity and respect for the natural world. This image is a testament to the timeless allure of the American desert and the awe-inspiring formations that define it. Andres, born in 1905 in Germany, began his photography career in 1920 and was one of the pioneers to use a Leica camera. His work is featured in several prestigious museums, including the Civil War Museum in Salamanca, Spain, the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Industrial Museum in Oberhausen, Germany. Andres was also a contributor to Edward Steichen's landmark exhibition "The Family of Man" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1951. The print is new, a Fine Art Print on high quality paper (Hahnemühle) made by Whitewall. It comes to you in a tube.
