About the Item

A beautiful black and white photograph of the ship "Balclutha" in dock, with Coit Tower in the background by famed San Francisco photographer Gene Wright (American, 20th Century). Image, 13.75"H x 5.5"W. Early in his career, worked for a number of Utah newspapers and had his own studios in Ogden, as well as Montpelier, Idaho. Mr. Wright was rejected for World War II service because of what his wife, Elizabeth Wright, called his "bad feet," but his "contribution to the war effort was photographing wives and girlfriends who wanted to send photos to their loved ones who were in the war." Wright moved to San Francisco in 1949 to work as a photographer for Southern Pacific Railroad and to experiment with a unique panoramic camera. In the 1950s, he opened a photo studio in the heart of North Beach. He spent a half century documenting the flavor and changing forms of the city he adored -- the vanishing alleys and rising Transamerica Pyramid, cable cars that seem to float in space, plunging streets, fog-shrouded bridges, Italian barbershop singers and beret-wearing Beats. A SF treasure, he was presented the Key to SF, and was named a living legend by the SF Board of Supervisors in 2002. In 2015, a coffee table book was published featuring more than 150 of Wright's photographs: "San Francisco Love Affair."
