I visualized this shot so many times in my head before coming here, over and over again. A big tusker walking towards me with Kilimanjaro in the back. Piece of cake, right? Well, it wasn’t that easy! This was supposed to be the dry season but it rained every single day, most roads were flooded, and the mountain was behind clouds 90% of the time. Whether you believe in climate change or not, something is off with the world for sure. Driving around, rerouting for hours I finally came across this gentle giant. She was perfect! Tusks so white, so straight, she could easily be in a toothpaste commercial. I’ve seen elephants before but nothing like the ones here in Amboseli National Park. They look absolutely magnificent. So here I am in a perfect angle, on the ground, looking at this gorgeous creature and praying for Kilimanjaro to reveal itself.. And it did. This photograph wouldn’t be this special if the sky was clear blue. I think the snow capped highest free standing mountain in the world was as important as the creature in front of it for this shot, I didn’t want to shoot it with a wide angle and make it a small detail in the back. That’s why I used the 250mm prime.

Gürdal Bibo is an award winning fine art photographer specializing in wildlife, landscape and cityscape photography. His inspiration comes from his own travels and the desire to share these exciting experiences with others.
