Harold “Doc” Edgerton was born in 1903, in Fremont, Nebraska. During his summers as a teenager, he worked in his uncle’s photo studio. After high school, Edgerton went on to MIT where he would earn his PhD in electrical engineering, in 1931. He created the strobe and would continue to perfect its mechanics and develop its multifaceted uses throughout his career. The strobe proved to be an unparalleled element to photography, making still frames of action possible. His scientific and artistic ventures were both highly successful but his true passion was teaching. He was a professor at MIT from 1927 until his death in 1990.
