First Steps, 1963 is a 7" x 9" gelatin silver photograph printed in the 1980s. Signed in ink on verso (back of photograph) by contemporary Czech artist Jan Saudek. Provenance: private collection.
“First Steps” is a celebration of parent-child intimacy. Standing apart from many of Saudek’s surreal and dreamlike works, here the artist documents reality to tell a story about familial bonding of father and child. With no need to show faces for the composition, we experience a baby’s first steps while being supported by his father. Capturing the feet of the two subjects - the strong and steady feet of the father and the playful feet of the baby excited about his new achievement, the work captures a universal moment.

Artist’s Bio:
Jan Saudek is a celebrated Czech artist born May, 1935. He is an art photographer and painter. Considered one of the most creative artists in Prague, he made most of his photographs from the 1960s-1990s, with many hand-colored and each a print unique. For Saudek's images shot in his studio and on location, the photographer used the same models for years. Committed to expressing his personal vision, Saudek never stopped celebrating life, liberty, sensuality, and close relationships regardless of the political regime. The artist's works have been included in The Family of Man, 1955 by Edward Steichen, and Saudek is commonly associated with Alfons Mucha, Lewis Carroll, Hans Bellmer, Duane Michals, and Robert Mapplethorpe. The Czech photographer's focus remains on human nature, with the belief that no one escapes his destiny: life, aging, and death are his subjects. Notable works include, The World of Jan Saudek: Photographs; Jan Saudek - Il teatro della vita; Story from Czechoslovakia, My Country; and Photographs by Jan Saudek. Additionally, Saudek's art gained prominence during the 1990s because of his collaboration with the publisher Taschen.

Jan Saudek
Jan Saudek, Czech Photographer, was born in Prague. In 1950, he got his first camera KODAK BABY Brownie - first photographic Attempts. Saudek apprenticed to a photographer in 1952, and he worked as a printing shop worker until 1983. In 1972, he found his typical WALL composition, which became a sort of projection screen for his figural scenes. His first monograph Il Teatro de la VITA appeared in Milano in 1981. In 1983, he was a free-lance photographer - he devoted himself fully to his work. Saudek was the bearer of the French title "Le Chevalier des Arts and Letters' ' (Knight of Art and Literature) in 1990, as the first Czech at all French film director Jerome de Missolz made a film about him Jan Saudek - Czech photographer. In 2005, appeared his 14., biggest monograph SAUDEK (published by Slovart, Praha), accompanied by a wide retrospective Exhibition in Praha. Saudek is nowadays the most renowned Czech photographer in the world. He has had over 400 one-man shows. His photographs are included in the most important world collections.
