About the Item

Edition of 12 More sizes on request Portrait of a Cheetah and her cubs. Joachim Schmeisser is represented by leading Galleries worldwide. His photographs are among the most sought-after and best-selling works in this genre worldwide and earned him an ever-growing following amongst art collectors. Born in 1958, has made a name for himself in various branches of photography. As an advertising photographer, the Munich native started working for international companies in the 1980s, and he was a pioneer in analogue compositing with his use of multiple exposures. But photography can be so much more than technical skill and a joy in experimentation. Building on his intense interest in his subject matter, his deeply personal view of the world, and his special way of seeing and self-expression, he has developed an equally unique and compelling visual language. This particularly characterizes the independent artistic work he has been creating since 2009 in places such as Ghana, Tanzania, and Kenya. With his iconic wildlife portraits, Joachim Schmeisser has gained widespread acclaim, receiving the prestigious Hasselblad Masters Award for his work in 2012. Several books of his photography have been issued by renowned publishing houses. His photographic work stands out from other artists in this genre and his unique visual language is often tried to be copied but never achieved. THE ETERNAL SUBLIME His deep interest in and his unique view of the world are what contribute to the profound impact of Joachim Schmeisser’s work. His photographs are always difficult to describe because they transcend the familiar and depict that which was once hidden, making it tangible. Joachim Schmeisser is world famous for his iconic images of Africa’s endangered wildlife. He received the prestigious. To him, animals are our equals with singular personalities. When we contemplate his images: we have a strong, empathetic connection with them and recognize ourselves in them. Timelessness and intimacy are embedded in his photographs. The concept of the sublime becomes palpable here. We realize that we are witnessing something magnificent, BEYOND PERCIEVED REALITY These images, their phenomenal atmosphere, their use of light and shadows, are hard to describe in words. The sublime is timeless, yet it demands that we develop a sensitivity to the subtle as well as a grandeur far beyond any conventional sense of beauty – this is what Joachim Schmeisser’s photographs are all about. INFINITY OF SPACE He describes his work as “metaphysically experiencing the sublime.” The resulting photographs project a sense of never-ending space but not with people but these magnificent animals. Joachim Schmeisser shows us these animals as beings with individual personalities: their beauty and dignity but also their vulnerability. Their irretrievable disappearence would destroy the delicate fabric of life on our planet. The combination of his epic panoramas of animals in dramatic landscapes and the aesthetics of early b/w portraits are brimming with an unmistakable compositional power as well as an unmatched aesthetic. Not least because of this unique visual language, his photographic work stands out from other artists in this genre. “I want my photographs to touch people emotionally, make them think, and draw attention to this precarious situation. I’m trying to sharpen the clouded view we have of our complex and fragile natural world,” – Joachim Schmeisser. – Photography, Animal, Africa, Wildlife, Nature, Large Format, Lion, Portrait, Close-Up, iconic, Big Cats

Terry O'Neill - Brigitte Bardot Shalako, Deauville, 1968, Printed After
By Terry O'Neill
Located in Greenwich, CT
French actress Brigitte Bardot in Deauville, 1968. It is the first time she meets British actor Sean Connery before the filming of 'Shalako', directed by Edward Dmytryk. In 1968, O’Neill got the call to travel down to Almeria, Spain to take photos during the filming of ‘Shalako’. He already knew and worked with one of the stars, Sean Connery, but this would be the first time he would meet Connery’s leading lady, Brigitte Bardot. Bardot burst onto the film screens with starring roles in ‘And God Created Woman,’ ‘A Very Private Affair’ and ‘The Truth’ – all box-office successes in Europe. ‘Shalako’ would be an attempt for Bardot to cross-over to America and become a Hollywood star. Unfortunately, ‘Shalako’ did not translate into the box-office numbers the studio was hoping for, however it’s remembered for having brought two of the sixties most iconic, charismatic sex symbols together on the big screen! Brigitte Anne-Marie Bardot is one of the most iconic French actresses and models in the world. She is one of the best known sex symbols of the 1950s and 1960s and was widely referred to by her initials, B.B. With her heavy fringe, kohl-lined eyes, pouty lips and seductive curves, Brigitte Bardot captured the sixties bombshell zeitgeist. Like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn, her image not only portrayed an era but an ideal that has remained indelibly imprinted in popular culture. Terry O’Neill is one of the world’s most collected photographers with work hanging in national art galleries and private collections worldwide. From presidents to pop stars he has photographed the frontline of fame for over six decades. O’Neill began his career at the birth of the 1960s. While other photographers concentrated on earthquakes, wars and politics, O’Neill realized that youth culture was a breaking news story on a global scale and began chronicling the emerging faces of film, fashion and music who would go on to define the Swinging Sixties. By 1965 he was being commissioned by the biggest magazines and newspapers in the world. No other living photographer has embraced the span of fame, capturing the icons of our age from Winston Churchill to Nelson Mandela, from Frank Sinatra and Elvis to Amy Winehouse, from Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot to Nicole Kidman, as well as every James Bond from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig and many other of your favorite celerities, models and famous political figures, royalty and fashion iconic names in fashion. He photographed The Beatles and The Rolling Stones when they were still struggling young bands in 1963, pioneered backstage reportage photography with David Bowie, Elton John, The Who, Eric Clapton, Chuck Berry and many more. His images have adorned historic rock albums, movie posters and international magazine covers. All Fine Art...

Art Shay Buddy Guy, 1966 archival pigment print 19h x 13w in 48.26h x 33.02w cm ASY177 “Art Shay’s photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head and then kicks you in the ass.” Roger Ebert “[Shay’s work] ranks with some of the greats of the 20th century.” Ellen & Richard Sandor, Renowned photo collectors “I’ve admired Art Shay’s work for almost forty years, and he keeps getting better. He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.” William Friedkin, Director of French Connection “Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.” Studs Terkel “Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. I’ve been a fan of his work since the early 1950s - before the launch of playboy magazine.” Hugh Hefner “Algren, Terkel, Royko, they gave us a voice. Art Shay gave us a face.” Tony Fitzpatrick, Chicago Artist “Art Shay is America’s Cartier-Bresson.” Thomas Dyja, author of The Third Coast “Chicago’s Art Shay in many ways is to American photography what Nelson Algren was to American writing: that rare and absolutely necessary citizen who’s blessed with a cold eye, a clear head, and a warm heart. What is it about Chicago that keeps giving us men like this?” Russell Banks, Novelist “The best images of Simone de Beauvoir and her times have been passed down to us by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gisele Freund, Robert Doisneau, Georges Brassai, and in America, the Chicago-based Art Shay, all world-class photographers.” Christophe Loviny, Art Editor, Paris “Art Shay is the best photo-journalist Chicago ever produced.” Arthur Siegel...
