About the Item
In this arresting black-and-white photograph, three individuals stand together, their expressions radiating a profound sense of resilience and unity. The monochromatic palette strips away distractions, drawing the viewer's focus to the intricate details and textures that define the subjects' clothing and accessories. Traditional attire adorned with elaborate beadwork and layered necklaces speaks volumes about their cultural heritage, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship and the significance of these adornments in their community. Their faces, weathered yet dignified, bear the marks of experience and wisdom. There is a raw and unfiltered honesty in their gazes, capturing the depth of their lived experiences. The central figure, slightly elevated in stature and framed by the other two, commands attention with a penetrating look and a wide, toothy smile that exudes an infectious joy. The other two individuals, equally compelling, offer hearty smiles that reveal a bond of camaraderie and shared history. This artwork is not just a portrait but a powerful narrative of identity, culture, and the unspoken connections that bind us. It invites the viewer to delve deeper into the stories behind those weathered faces and the rich traditions they embody, making it a truly compelling piece that resonates on multiple levels.
A portrait of three grandmothers from three separate communities in Northern Kenya.
Kenny uses village huts as makeshift studios and the reflected sun as his only illumination. His subjects joyful demeanor belies the reality of harsh arid winds, extreme temperatures, droughts and dust.
The photograph can be framed traditionally, be printed onto aluminium and float framed or given an acrylic face mount with a 3-dimensional appearance and highly contemporary feel.

John Kenny 1
Over the last decade John Kenny has travelled to some of the remotest corners of sub-Saharan Africa to highlight the pivotal role that traditional communities play in places where the earth’s resources are minimal and under growing threat. His striking portraits emphasize beauty and inherent strength as well as giving us insight into traditional dress and adornment. John has also extended this work to document ethnic groups in India. His work is exhibited worldwide through art fairs and has been featured in many periodicals and newspapers including interviews in Professional Photographer, Eyes In Magazine, Digital Photographer, Black and White Photography, Tribal Art Magazine, Go Magazine among many more. John actively supports organisations that work within traditional African communities and from this he has been a guest speaker on BBC Radio 4 and at the London International Documentary Festival. John regularly donates works in support of charities such as Survival international and Concern Worldwide.
