About the Item
I met Lemoroko, a Rendille moran (warrior), in the southern reaches of the Rendille homeland, on the boundary of the neighbouring Samburu District. He had a striking, chiselled appearance, and vibrant blue eyes that seemed so incongruous next to his dark skin.
A day later, some 30 kilometres further north I met him again. He was singing whilst pulling buckets of water from a well and filling troughs for the hundreds of camels in the small valley. Surprised to see him again, I could not resist telling him that his blue eyes and sculpted face were stunning to my western eyes. The other Rendille warriors who were sat around us laughed, before telling my guide that they often also referred to Lemoroko as the ‘rock face’ or the man with the ‘sky in his eyes’.
John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His images are all taken with natural light and his subjects in their day to day attire.
The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a contemporary look.

biography
Justin Creedy Smith is a British photographer.
Having graduated with a bachelor of arts degree – including a thesis on the role of war photography as a propaganda tool – he moved to Paris in 1984. Initially working as a studio assistant, his apprenticeship in fashion and advertising photography was both intense and diverse. He rapidly started assisting on a free-lance basis the likes of Horst P. Horst and Steven Meisel.
From 1985 until 1987 he was assistant to Peter Lindbergh.
In 1987 he travelled to Japan for the first time, a voyage that had a profound impact on him. Returning to Europe in 1988 he started working for Japanese magazines...
