About the Item

Mago National Park in southern Ethiopia is home to the Mursi, one of the most well known tribes of the Omo valley. The area is inhospitable to outsiders, because of the heat, humidity, dense bush, and tsetse fly and, in the past, the aggression shown by the Mursi tribe. The Mursi are semi-nomadic pastoralists, with distinctive clay lip plates. The plates are worn by women above a certain age, but only during special occasions as it’s impossible to talk or eat with them in. Larger lip plates, like this woman’s, are usually worn by older women as it takes months or years from the first cut underneath the lower lip can be stretched enough to hold one of these plates. John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His images are all taken with natural light and in their day to day attire. John Kenny’s black and white photographic portraits are taken on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa and India. All shot with natural light and with the subjects in their day to day attire they reveal the pride and strength inherent in tradional ways of life. The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a very contemporary feel. „Inspired by the fascinating peoples of southern Ethiopia I decided to travel deep into this beautiful country and experience the rural tribes in the flesh. I have always been fascinated by 18th and 19th century ethnographic sketches and brilliant black and white anthropological photography in far away countries. As a curious individual I want to submerge myself in different cultures, sights and...
