About the Item
I met this girl from the Turkana community of Loiyangalani very near to the shores of Lake Turkana. She was walking with her head covered to provide some protection from the fierce midday sun.
The lake is salty and useless as drinking water for both humans and animals. Its shores are home to scorpions and vipers, while the waters are inhabited by a huge number of crocodiles that regularly kill fisherman and people swimming in the lake.
The Turkana who are nomadic pastoralists, generally leaving lake fishing and swimming to their neighbours, the remarkable El Molo. The El Molo have fished the lake for centuries and trade the local catch of crocodile, tilapia and Nile perch with their Turkana neighbours.
John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His images are all taken with natural light and his subjects in their day to day attire.
The C-type prints are mounted with an acrylic face mount giving them a 3-dimensional appearance and a contemporary look.
