About the Item

Waiting for the rains in Wamba The first time I visited Wamba in the heart of the Samburu district its red soil was bone dry. The rains were a couple of week’s overdue, and with only around 3-4 weeks of rain a year, people feared drought, and the inevitable famine that would follow. A week later when I returned the sky was overcast and full of dark clouds. Wamba now had greenery on its bushes and trees. Discussions focused on impending marriages, the returning warriors and their animals, and the forthcoming circumcision ceremonies. Water is clearly pivotal to the continuation of life and cultural practices in Kenya’s north; a case of ‘better late than never’ for the rains at Wamba. John Kenny’s work is all shot on location in some of the remotest corners of Africa. His subjects are lit with natural light and wear their day to day attire.
