About the Item

For me, an artistic process is an act of investigation – a passionate attempt to establish an understanding of the natural world – a version that incorporates both intellectual and emotional comprehension which are sometimes incompatible, and distills them into a visual language of images where they can be contemplated. Making images of these things is a natural extension of being fascinated, touched, or intrigued by them. This process of seeing, and recording transforms me. It is how I express wonder and love, a form of dedication. It is also a record of my life and my desire to connect myself to all other things, the acknowledgment of a search for an explanation, for meaning and significance, and a primal longing to grasp things that are unknowable. I begin with a silver photographic image, evidence. Then I paint this in many transparent layers of oil paint and pencil. If I am lucky the media combine, and become enmeshed, a curious union of what was real with my own painterly exaggerations and embellishments, so I can show how beautiful it all is — the light, the form, the texture, and color, because I am a sensualist and this is my deepest pleasure, my lovely addiction. Each of these pieces of artwork is silver gelatin photographs that have been selenium toned, archival dry mounted on 4-ply museum rag board then hand-colored with many layers of oil paint and colored pencils. This means that no two are exactly alike, and because of the nature of the process, each one is unique.

'Blackburian Warbler' - bird - black and white - Audubon
Located in Atlanta, GA
"Blackburian Warbler" is a black and white artwork made from asphalt on cement and plaster mounted on wood panel. Atlanta-based artist, Tim Hunter’s work stems from his love of nature and concern for the environment. In 2003 he began working primarily with images of birds as an expression of his spiritual connection with nature. After reading an article about the declining bird populations in Georgia, he turned his focus to environmental issues. An avid bird watcher, Tim also experienced the heavily wooded area he grew up in, slowly reduced to shopping malls and subdivisions. He uses asphalt and cement to create his works which refer to the loss of habitat due to human expansion, which is one of the main causes of declining bird populations. His silhouettes are taken from Audubon’s series “Birds of America” which references a period in the past when the bird populations in America were more abundant. Tim received a BFA in printmaking from California College of Arts, Oakland, CA and an MFA in painting from Georgia State...
