Fashion Show, 1963, Harlem, USA by Leonard Freed, is a 11” x 14” gelatin silver print, which appears in the photographer's seminal Black in White America book (p. 104). The photograph is stamped on verso (photo back) and signed by the estate/photographer's widow, Brigitte Freed.
The image amplifies fashion back in the day when African Americans in Harlem enjoyed long necklaces, glamorous gowns, and gloves for women. Fashion has always been an extension of the African American community identity in Harlem as a means to black is beautiful.

Artist’s Bio:
Leonard Freed (1929-2006) was an American photographer from Brooklyn, New York. His "Black in White America" series made him known as a documentarian, a social documentary photographer. Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 onwards and as a Magnum photographer Freed traveled widely abroad and, in the US, photographing African Americans (1964-65), events in Israel (1967-68, 1973), and the New York City police department (1972-79). Freed's coverage of the American civil rights movement is well-known as are his photo essays on New York, Italy, Germany, The Kate Series, among others.

Leonard Freed
Leonard Freed was born on October 23, 1929, in Brooklyn. Although Freed's photographic career is defined by documentary photo essays, such as Black in White America, Freed traveled extensively and captured people, places and things that interested him in locations around the globe. A Magnum photographer, Freed traveled widely, photographing African Americans in America from 1964–65, events in Israel from 1967–68 and in 1973 and the New York City police department from 1972–79, to name a few celebrated assignments. Freed’s coverage of the American civil rights movement made him famous, although he continued to produce photo essays on New York, Italians and many other subjects. Leonard Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 until his death on November 29, 2006, Philipstown.
