About the Item
Celebrity Photography - Black & White
Hand Signed by Lynn Goldsmith
About the Artist:
Lynn Goldsmith's imagery is in numerous collections: The Smithsonian, The Polaroid Collection, The Museum of Modern Art, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the permanent collection of Museum Folkwang. She is a multi-awarded portrait photographer whose work has appeared on and between the covers of Life, Newsweek, Time, Rolling Stone, People, Elle, The New Yorker, etc. Her subjects have varied from entertainment personalities to sports stars, from film directors to authors, from the extra-ordinary to the ordinary man on the street. Her forty years of photography have not only been an investigation into the nature of the human spirit, but also into the natural wonders of our planet.
Twelve books of her photography have been published. She has been on The New York Times Best Seller list as well as won two Art Direction awards for them. Lynn's professional achievements are in no way limited to the world of photography. She is the youngest member ever to be accepted into the DGA (Director's Guild of America). In 1971, she was the director of Joshua Television, the first company to do video magnification for rock groups entertaining at large venues. In 1973, Lynn directed "We're An American Band", the first music documentary to be released as a theatrical short. In the mid-seventies, Lynn stopped directing to concentrate fully on photography. She has been a consistent contributor to the highly acclaimed series of Day in the Life of books series, as well as many other photography collections.
By the early 80's Lynn departed from the worlds of both photography and film, to become the first 'optic-music' artist. Lynn's written songs with recording artists Sting, Steve Winwood, Todd Rundgren, and Nile Rodgers. Her debut album won critical acclaim. As was her plan, the videos from the album which she produced and directed became more than commercials for the record. They were used by the United States Department of Labor to inspire unemployed youths, and by the National Marriage Counsel in England. The Museum of Modern Art in New York City has two of the album's videos in their permanent collection as she was among the first to do 3-dimensional computer animation. Though a graduate from the University of Michigan, with a B.A. in both English and Psychology, Lynn considers herself a self-taught artist and entrepreneur. She was the founder of LGI Photo Agency, an organization which represented the work of over two hundred worldwide photographers. Established in 1976, LGI was the first agency to specialize in servicing celebrity portraiture for editorial usage. LGI was sold in 1997 so that Lynn could more fully focus on creating images.
The wide range of Lynn's talents, skills and achievements are products of a belief she holds constant: Creativity is based on breaking limiting though patterns, thus making anything possible.
Lynn was recently named as an honoree for an Achievement in Portraiture in the 2020 Lucie Awards. She joins a star studded roster of recipients including, Annie Liebovitz, Judith Joy Ross, Joyce Tenneson and many more.

Lynn Goldsmith
Lynn Goldsmith has documented over five decades of American culture, capturing stars from The Beatles and The Rolling Stones to David Bowie, Blondie and Iggy Pop. Taking advantage of the close access granted to acts in the 60s and 70s, she created insightful, candid shots that delved below the of rock and roll. Goldsmith has a particularly close working relationship with Patti Smith who she photographed for the cover of her legendary Easter album in 1977. The award-winning photographer has had 12 best-selling books of her work published; she also works as a documentary filmmaker and a singer and songwriter (under the pseudonym Will Powers). Goldsmith’s work is held in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Polaroid Collection, the Museum Of Modern Art, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Photography, and the permanent collection of Museum Folkwang.

“Art Shay’s photography shakes you up, sets you down gently, pats you on the head and then kicks you in the ass.”
Roger Ebert
“[Shay’s work] ranks with some of the greats of the 20th century.”
Ellen & Richard Sandor, Renowned photo collectors
“I’ve admired Art Shay’s work for almost forty years, and he keeps getting better. He can do anything with a camera, but what he mostly does is capture real moments and transform them into visual poetry. His work continues to be an inspiration to me.”
William Friedkin, Director of French Connection
“Art Shay is one of our finest photographers. His work over the past fifty years has artfully captured the beauty, humor, and pathos of America.”
Studs Terkel
“Art Shay is one of the best photojournalists I know. I’ve been a fan of his work since the early 1950s - before the launch of playboy magazine.”
Hugh Hefner
“Algren, Terkel, Royko, they gave us a voice. Art Shay gave us a face.”
Tony Fitzpatrick, Chicago Artist
“Art Shay is America’s Cartier-Bresson.”
Thomas Dyja, author of The Third Coast
“Chicago’s Art Shay in many ways is to American photography what Nelson Algren was to American writing: that rare and absolutely necessary citizen who’s blessed with a cold eye, a clear head, and a warm heart. What is it about Chicago that keeps giving us men like this?”
Russell Banks, Novelist
“The best images of Simone de Beauvoir and her times have been passed down to us by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gisele Freund, Robert Doisneau, Georges Brassai, and in America, the Chicago-based Art Shay, all world-class photographers.”
Christophe Loviny, Art Editor, Paris
“Art Shay is the best photo-journalist Chicago ever produced.”
