The collection depicts attractive examples of Mackenzie's wide-
lens studies of architecture, such as barns and abandoned houses, set into richly colored landscapes.
Maxwell MacKenzie is an award-winning professional and fine-art photographer based in Washington, DC and Minnesota. Over the past thirty-five years, his photographic assignments have taken him to 20 states and a dozen foreign countries, including Austria, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Brazil, Brussels, England, France, Greece, Morocco, Norway, Sweden, and Wales.
Three books of Mackenzie's fine-art photographs have been published: Abandonings, (1995), color panoramic photographs of his native Otter Tail County, MN, which was awarded the Silver Medal Award for Excellence from Photo District News; American Ruins, Ghosts on the Landscape, (2001) black & white panoramics made in Montana, Idaho, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Dakotas; and Markings, (2007), color abstract aerials made from his self-piloted, powered-parachute, a 300 pound, ultra-light aircraft.
MacKenzie’s work is included in the permanent collection of The Phillips Collection as well as hundreds of private and corporate collections, including Exxon, Citibank, Deloitte & Touche, Dow Jones, Fannie Mae, The New York Hospital, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, the Union Bank of Switzerland, Phillip Morris, and the Washington Post. His fine-art photographs of the American West are also included in numerous American Embassy collections including Bogota, Lima, Lagos, and Moscow.
His work has been exhibited in dozens of museums and galleries all over the country, including solo shows at The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, Virginia Beach; The American Institute of Architects, DC; The Nordic Heritage Museum, in Seattle, WA; The Piedmont Arts Association, Martinsville, VA; the Julie Saul Gallery in NYC, the DNJ Gallery in LA; The Gallatin River Gallery, in Big Sky, MT; Anne Reed Gallery in Sun Valley, ID; The International Photography Hall of Fame, in Oklahoma, City; the Bivins Gallery at Duke University, NC; the University of Minnesota – Morris; the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, MN; The Virginia Foundation for Architecture, Richmond, and the Addison-Ripley Gallery in DC.
Mr. MacKenzie attended the University of Pennsylvania, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a dual major in Architecture and Photography from Bennington College, Vermont, with advanced study in photography at the Corcoran College of Art + Design as well as the Maine and Santa Fe Photo Workshops.
MacKenzie received a $ 10,000 Grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts in support of his “TOBACCO” Project, which was exhibited at the National Headquarters of the American Institute of Architects in 2003. He has also been awarded Artist Fellowship Grants from the DC Commission on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and, in 1995, MacKenzie was named the Candace DeVries Olesen Alumni Fellow at Bennington, and delivered an illustrated all-college lecture entitled: "Art and Commerce: Balancing Two Worlds.” In 2010, he was awarded a one-month artist residency at the Vermont Studio Center.
Mr MacKenzie has taught one-week workshops and assorted master classes at The International Center of Photography in New York, The Palm Beach Photo Workshops, The Horizon Photo Workshop, and at Bennington College in Vermont. He has presented illustrated lectures at numerous institutions including The Corcoran College of Art + Design, and The American Architectural Foundation; the ASMP National Biennial Conference in San Diego; The AIA National Convention in New Orleans; The Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, in Virginia Beach; The World Bank/International Monetary Fund, in DC; The International Photography Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City; Catholic University, Washington, D.C., and served as a guest artist at the Jay Maisel Workshop in New York. He did post-graduate work at the Corcoran Gallery School of Art, and studied with two of the best practitioners in his field: Peter Aaron of ESTO Photographics at the Maine Photographic Workshop, and Nick Merrick of Hedrich Blessing at the Santa Fe Photo Workshop.
MacKenzie himself has taught week-long master classes at the Palm Beach Photographic Centre, Montgomery College, Maryland, and recently taught a workshop at the International Center of Photography in NY entitled: "The Poetry of Places, Exploring the Beauty of the Man-Made". He has received individual artist grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts, and the DC Commission on the Arts. MacKenzie is the author of 3 books of large scale panoramic and aerial fine-art photography (at the juncture between Bernd Becher and Hilla Becher and Peter Lik). and has been widely exhibited in galleries and museums nationwide. His photographs can be seen in numerous private, corporate, and institutional collections, including the permanent collections of the American Embassies in Bogota, Columbia; Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire; Conakry, Guinea; Moscow, Russia; Kathmandu, Nepal; Dushanbe, Tajikistan; & Lima, Peru.
MacKenzie's commercial work has been published in brochures, books and magazines worldwide, including over 500 covers, a sampling of which is shown elsewhere on this site. He is highly regarded for his exquisitely orderly, precise, and balanced compositions, and for the artful sensitivity and subtlety of his lighting. Mark Citret was born in 1949 in Buffalo, New York, and grew up in San Francisco. He began photographing seriously in 1968 and received both his BA and MA in Art from San Francisco State University.
He has worked on many photographic projects over the course of his career and continues to do so. From 1973 to 1975 he lived in and photographed Halcott Center, a farming valley in New York's Catskill Mountains. In the mid to late 1980s, he produced a large body of work with the working title of "Unnatural Wonders", which is his personal survey of architecture in the national parks. He spent four years, 1990 to 1993, photographing "Coastside Plant", a massive construction site in the southwest corner of San Francisco. Since he moved to his current home in 1986, he has been photographing the ever-changing play of ocean and sky from the cliff behind his house. Currently, he is in the midst of a multi-year commission from the University of California San Francisco, photographing the construction of their 43 acre Mission Bay life-sciences campus.
