Nickolas Muray
Frida and Diego with Gas Mask - Black and White Photograph, Couple

1939

About the Item

Frida and Diego with Gas Mask is a limited edition black and white portrait of Mexican painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The couple embraces each other while Frida holds a gas mask in her hand. Archival Pigment Print Paper size: 19 x 13 in., Image size: 12.5 x 12 in. Edition of 30 Title, artist name, edition number, copyright, print type, printer Bruce Hucko and print date in pencil on print verso Nickolas Muray (1892–1965) was a Hungarian born artist that worked in New York as a photographer, specializing in portraits of celebrities. His work was often seen in Vanity Fair magazine. Nick’s friendship with the Mexican artist, Miguel Covarrubias, lead to the introduction to Frida Kahlo when Nick visited Mexico. Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo were introduced by Covarubbias and it was in 1931 when Nickolas and Frida’s love affair started. Later, when Frida had a solo exhibition at the renowned Julian Levy gallery in New York, she continued their affair. Most of the portraits that will be exhibited were taken in Nick’s studio during that New York visit. During Nickolas Muray's forty-five year career as a New York photographer, he developed a growing reputation that began during the decade of the Twenties when he photographed everybody who was anybody. At the time of his death, most Americans had seen, at one time or another, Muray's portraits of celebrities, Presidents, or advertisements. Whether they knew the identity of the photographer who had created these images, these had infiltrated America's psyche as icons with which it readily identified. Between 1920 and 1940, Nickolas Muray made over 10,000 portraits. Who would have thought that the one of Frida Kahlo, c. 1939 would bring him greater acknowledgment than any? But it did. The portrait, made in the winter of 1938-39, while Kahlo sojourned in New York, attending her exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery, became the best known and loved portrait made by Nickolas Muray. Muray and Kahlo were at the height of a ten-year love affair in 1939 when the portrait was made. Their affair had started in 1931, after Muray was divorced from his second wife and shortly after Kahlo's marriage to Mexican muralist painter Diego Rivera. It outlived Muray's third marriage and Kahlo's divorce and remarriage to Rivera by one year, ending in 1941. Muray wanted to marry, but when it became apparent that Kahlo wanted Muray for a lover, not a husband, Muray took his leave for good and married his fourth and last wife. He and Kahlo remained good friends until her death, in 1954. After Kahlo received the portrait in Mexico, she wrote to Muray on June 3, 1939: "Nick darling, I got my wonderful picture you send me, I find it even more beautiful than in New York. Diego says that it is as marvelous as a Piero de la Francesca. To me it is more than that, it is a treasure, and besides, it will always remind me that mornig...[when] we went to your shop to take photos. This one was one of them. And now I have it near me. You will always be inside the magenta rebozo (on the left side)." Carbon copies of the portrait are in the permanent collection of the Frida Kahlo Museum, The George Eastman House, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. -Salomon Grimberg

Price for UNFRAMED The Robin Rice Gallery proudly announces SUMMERTIME Salon 2018, an annual photography exhibit featuring gallery artists as well as a few newcomers. This year’s opening reception will be held on Wednesday, June 27th from 6 – 8 PM, and the show will be on view until September 23rd, 2018 Rice has brought together the works of 55 gallery artists and nearly a hundred photographs for this salon-style exhibition. From floor to ceiling, the walls of the gallery are a mosaic of various size photographs in sepia, color and black & white, expertly hung to fit together like pieces of a puzzle. “This is my favorite exhibition even though it takes months to curate and a week to install,” says Rice. “I love the moment when a viewer is first drawn to an image. Sometimes in’s indefinable; a moment when the viewer not only shares but reconnects to an experience remembered.” Each year, the Summertime Salon matures and Rice’s annual masterpiece is revealed to showcase an exhibition stronger than the year before. Rice has a close relationship with the works of her photographers, and strategically curates the show to best exemplify the artists’ strengths, remaining cohesively linked by Rice’s aesthetic. This year’s invitational image, Hoop and Ball by Nenad Samuilo Amodaj is from a series of one hundred photographs. Rice chose three photographs from Amodaj’s series to create a triptych on the back wall of her gallery for this exhibition. The invitational image is of a standing semi-nude woman in profile wearing a hoop skirt. Her entire head rests inside of a large white plaster ball that she holds above her. He explained: “I wanted to explore the abstract architectural properties of the hoop skirt, a clothing item with curious geometric form that appears both in nature and in the world of artifice.” Before photographing the model he created numerous figure drawings that helped solidify his vision for the series. black and white, photography, women, woman, portrait, feminist, aviation, aviator, fashion Southampton...
